4 of the Funniest 90s Films To Watch With Your Girlfriends

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Nottingham chapter.

The 90’s era was undoubtedly a great time for chick-flicks, rom-com’s and the comedy genre in general. The popularity of these four films today only supports their universal nature, transcending the 90’s. With Valentine’s Day coming up, it’s the perfect opportunity to choose a rom-com to watch either with a significant other, a bunch of girlfriends, or all by yourself (because you don’t need another person to validate your watching any of these movies).

But which of the iconic 90’s rom-com’s are approved by Her Campus Nottingham?

1. Clueless

Clueless is the epitome of the romanticised American high-school experience that, deep inside, we all wish we experienced. Alicia Silverstone plays the fashion-forward and totally iconic Cher Horowitz who battles her way through high school, boys and potential careers. Could it BE more relatable?

2. 10 Things I Hate About You

A very funny (and very loose) adaptation of Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew, this modernisation puts the Shakespeare play in the context of 90s American high school. This modern spin definitely helped to popularise the chick flick to teenagers around the globe, with many being surprised that it’s based off a Shakespearean comedy. The classic story of a spoilt young teenager who isn’t allowed to date until her outcast sister does.

3. Home Alone

Along with its sequel, Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, Home Alone has charmed households of families year on year around Christmas time. I know in my household it is played long after Christmas, and rightly so. Full of slap-stick humour and 90s references, Home Alone is definitely a worthy addition to the list.

4. Pretty Woman

Julia Roberts plays the titular character of Vivian who becomes enthralled in a Cinderella-esque story when she unexpectedly involves herself with a billionaire suitor, Edward Lewis (Richard Gere). Pretty Woman is definitely more complex than most comedies — and that’s exactly what makes it so iconic. It won’t fail to make you both cry and laugh!

I'm a third year English student at University of Nottingham and when I'm not working or writing, I'm probably watching a Disney movie or listening to one of their soundtracks! I'm a Campus Correspondent for HC Nottingham and generally write about food, travel, and the food I've experienced on my travels!
