This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Nottingham chapter.

1. West Hollywood Carnaval – Los Angeles, California, USA

Attended by over half a million people each year, the West Hollywood Carnaval showcases the famous, laid-back Californian attitude which creates an unforgettable experience. Located on the Santa Monica Boulevard, this event attracts everyone from the young to the old and features some of California’s most creative and outrageous costumes.

2. Osaka, Japan

In a country famed for single-handedly introducing the world to Cosplay (costume play) there is no doubt that Japan is a front-runner in terms of Halloween dress-up. Osaka is lesser known as a region when compared to the fashionable capital Tokyo – but Halloween in Osaka is bound not to disappoint. The people of Osaka don’t waste any time strutting their stuff in the most elaborate Cosplays you have ever seen. The highlights in Osaka include parties in Triangle Park, a favourite amongst the locals, as well as Osaka’s infamous Naniwa Halloween party event.

3. New Orleans, Louisiana, USA

You may already know New Orleans for its world-renowned Mardi Gras celebrations, however New Orleans at Halloween is also one of the biggest events of the year. Sometimes referred to as the most haunted city in America, New Orleans has countless ghost tours for those who fancy a taste of the afterlife and wish to experience locations with an authentic spook factor during Halloween. Partygoers can also head over to the Faubourg Marigny neighborhood to experience a Halloween atmosphere like no other.

4. Transylvania, Romania

For a more untraditional Halloween adventure, a trip to Transylvania would be one to remember. The main Halloween highlights include a tour of Bran Castle, the home of Dracula. Transylvania is worth a visit solely because of its magnificent views and untouched medieval villages.

5. Queen Mary’s Dark Harbor – Long Beach, California, USA

This harrowing Halloween experience takes place aboard a vintage ocean liner, permanently docked at Long Beach. The main attraction is the many haunted mazes built inside the ship. The mazes bring famous horror stories to life as a creepy tale is played out right before your eyes. This spine-chilling venue, incorporated with the well thought-out “frights”, are sure to leave you with goose bumps on Halloween.
