Why It’s Okay to Switch Majors

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Notre Dame chapter.

I came into Notre Dame as an aerospace engineer. Yup, that’s right. I thought I was going to be an AEROSPACE ENGINEER. It took about two days of orientation to realize that that field was not for me and I promptly switched my entire focus to english. It wasn’t until I spent some time with my roommate, who also happened to be an English major, that I realized I didn’t quite have the spark for writing that she did. I then moved onto psychology and met the scariest man I’ve ever met in my life: Anre Venter. Anre is the head of the Psychology department and looks like the most terrifying version of Professor Dumbledore I’ve ever met. No chance I was participating in his 200-person lecture, so I decided Economics was probably an easy way to make money (boy, was I wrong). It took three failed tests before I decided Economics was not for me and I found myself, for the fourth time in two years, majorless.

I was so preoccupied with doing something that would provide me with the future I had hoped for, that I was making myself miserable in the process. It was then that my dad gave me some of the best advice that I’ve ever received, “Do what you love, the money will come.” This led me to what I can easily define as the happiest place on campus, the rainbow coloured American Studies department. Never before had I been given a t-shirt for switching majors and had my picture put up on a bulletin board with all of the other majors in my year. Never before had I received such a warm and stress-free welcome from the people involved in the major. Never before had I felt so happy and at home in my major. I didn’t realize that you were supposed to feel that way about your major—proud and excited to tell people about it every chance you get. I’ve never been so sure that I belonged anywhere more than in the American Studies department.

So you see, no matter how many tries it takes, keep changing your major until you find one that you truly love, are excited for and proud of. Sure Business and Pre-Med majors will make a lot of money, but if you don’t truly love it then what’s the point! College is the time to make mistakes and change your mind over and over. It’s okay to not know what you want to do—that’s what college is for! We’re here to figure it out, and if it takes you a few tries then that’s more than okay. As much as some of you might not want to believe it, we’re still kids; we’re indecisive and impatient and we don’t know what we want, at least not at first. The sooner you come to terms with that, the better. You should spend college doing something that you truly love. The money and success will come, but happiness is something you shouldn’t have to wait for.
