Too Cool for School: Rahul Ramani, ’18

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Notre Dame chapter.

You’ve seen him behind the lens, capturing the candids of campus. Or perhaps you’ve glimpsed him onstage, taking his talents to an energetic PEMCo ensemble. Chances are, if you haven’t seen him, you’ve definitely heard him (and fawned over him, as you do for the entirety of the blessing that is the Undertones *swoon*).

Meet Sophomore Rahul Ramani, officially resident to South Quad but usually rushing to fifteen different places at any given time.

The Basics

Name: Rahul Ramani

Graduation Year: 2018

Hometown: Clarendon Hills, IL

Major/minor: Science-Business/International Development Studies

Dorm: Morrissey (but also kind of McGlinn)

Nickname: Jah, Hool, Rahooligan

Relationship status: Very much single.

On Activities

What are you involved in on campus?

Glee Club, Undertones, Symphony Orchestra, Student Union Board (SUB), PEMCo, I think that’s it… sometimes I lose track of what I have to do.

Besides that, what do you like to do in your spare time (since you have SO much of it)?

Listen to music, photography, drink milkshakes, take naps, spend hours watching Buzzfeed Taste Test videos.

On Notre Dame

Why did you choose Notre Dame for college?

I applied only to schools in the Midwest because, weirdly enough, I’m a big fan of the cold weather. And Notre Dame was the only school that offered Science-Business as a single major – allowing me to have an option between med school or healthcare management. So, that helped. Plus, the campus visit I had junior year of high school really solidified that elusive idea of the “ND community” – something I had only heard about from others, but now cherish.

What’s your favorite location on campus… why?

Either my bed – because sleep – or one of the benches by the lakes.

What’s on your ND bucket list? (C’mon, we all secretly have one).

True, I did make one with my best friend but it’s three pages long. So, I’ll list only a couple things.

  • Steal cereal from the dining hall and use it to train an army of STEM squirrels to take my Orgo tests for me.
  • Go to the dining hall, get food, and then trade trays with a friend.
  • Play hide and seek on campus.
  • Take the bus to St. Mary’s.
  • Go to Feve on a Friday. And if it’s closed, have a dance party right outside the doors so that they let us in.
  • Blast music and jam awkwardly on the way to class.

What do you love about your dorm?

All of my (hopefully) lifelong friends!

Do you have a favorite dining hall meal?

Reese’s Pie.

On singing with Glee Club and the Undertones

Give me the inside scoop on being part of the Undertones. (e.g. is it anything like the TV show Glee?)

It’s like the TV show in that we also sing songs! Otherwise, not really. It’s a lot more work than it seems – about three hours of rehearsal in addition to the 5-6 we already have for Glee Club. The people and final outcomes make it worth it though.

What’s your favorite song to perform?

Well, this semester, I’m singing a pretty cool arrangement of “Hey Ya” (shout out to Tony Stedge) where I get to do some crazy riffing.

How about your favorite song to perform alone in your room/shower/car where no one else can judge you?

I secretly love to sing “Once Upon Another Time” by Sara Bareilles and “From Eden” by Hozier.

On anything and everything else

Boxers or briefs? Both. And boxer briefs. I’m indecisive.

What’s your most random talent? I’m really good at getting sick.

Any pet peeves? Chewing with your mouth open. Weather above 80 degrees.

Spirit animal? A snail. I do everything slowly.

Some highlights of this past summer?

An SSLP in New Jersey where I worked at an HIV/AIDS center. A weekend where all of my gal pals from McGlinn flew out to New Jersey and we went to the beach ‘n’ stuff. A month in Europe with Glee Club.

Favorite movie? Inception. Hands down. I’ve seen it eleven times.

TV show? Easy, Parks and Recreation.

Quote? “No” — Rosa Parks.

US president? If only Jon Stewart were in the running…

According to your Facebook profile, you are a man who “loves milkshakes”. Can you confirm or deny this statement? Additionally, how do you feel about the song “Milkshake”?

God, milkshakes are my lifeline. I got one around 1 am the other day from Reckers because all my homework was making me sad. I pounded it in about 3 minutes.
And the song, “Milkshake,” well you know me, all the boys are clearly flocking to me. ;)

Thanks, Rahul! Have a milkshake on us and stay cool (or below 80 degrees, at least).

XOXO, HCND.

She hails from Kansas City (the Kansas side, hold the Wizard of Oz references) but currently resides with the Chaos of Cavanaugh Hall, and she never stops talking about either one.
