This past week of quarantine has been very eye-opening. Now, not only do I appreciate being able to go to the grocery store and having the opportunity to hang out with my friends whenever I like, but I’m also more anxious to travel the world. I think every college student wants to go on a vacation somewhere. We’re young, and life is only going to bring more responsibility as the years go on. So, I thought I’d give you a few unique travel destinations off the tourist-beaten trail to dream about until social distancing becomes obsolete.
- Lviv, Ukraine

Before the spread of the COVID-19 virus led to the suspension of all international travel, I was actually planning on spending a few weeks in Lviv on a service trip! Lviv is a hidden gem in Eastern Europe. Located on the Western side of Ukraine, the buildings in Old Town are so charming that you’ll think you’re in a fairy tale. When you’re in the city, go watch candymakers create delicious treats in their shops or see a show at the Lviv National Opera. Did I mention that most people speak English there, and the US dollar goes a long way? Many of the BIG tourist sites in Europe are in the Western half, so go see Lviv if you want to learn even more about the continent as a whole.

- Luxor, Egypt

Everyone knows about the Great Pyramids of Giza, but what if I told you that there are even cooler Ancient Egyptian sites if you follow the Nile South? Luxor is an amazing place that’s home to the Valley of the Kings—a desert valley with over sixty royal tombs. The Temple of Karnak is one of the most breathtaking pieces of architecture to exist with its hypostyle hall, and the Morturary Temple of Hatshepsut is an inspiring place with its dedication to the longest ruling woman of Ancient Egypt. Don’t sleep on this city!

- Granada, Spain

On the Southern side of Spain, you can find a beautiful Spanish city called Granada. Before the city was conquered by Ferdinand and Isabella in 1492, Granada was under Moorish control. The influence of Islamic culture can still be found in the city, especially in the Moorish fortress of the Alhambra citadel. This palace is a blend of medieval Islamic, Renaissance Christian, and modern architectural styles—a blend that can be found in very few places in this world today. Don’t want to see a pretty building? Go eat some of the local food in the area, or check out a flamenco performance!

- Angkor Wat, Cambodia

In Southeastern Asia lies one of the most impressive religious complexes to ever exist. In fact, it’s the largest religious complex to exist. This Hindu-to-Buddhist temple exhibits art from the Khmer Empire ranging from the 9th to the 14th centuries. Learn about a different culture and religion at the same time by visiting this masterpiece. It was even built in the shape of a lotus flower and floats on the water! How cool is that?!?

- Chiang Mai, Thailand

After you visit Angkor Wat, you can travel one country West to Thailand. Chiang Mai is a beautiful city where you can do some shopping in the famous Night Bazaar. Check out the awesome golden Buddhist Temples, and take a boat down one of the rivers. Although, my biggest reason for wanting to visit this city is because there’s an elephant rescue park, and I’m OBSESSED with elephants.
