An Ode to Oatmeal: Why It’s a Staple for College Life

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Notre Dame chapter.

A few weeks ago, we all had to pack our things and move in to our homes under the Dome. I don’t know for sure, but I imagine that most of you have a mental or physical list of things that you absolutely have to bring with you to college. These could be clothers, shampoo, toothpaste, etc. Maybe you also know what food you always want, whenever possible, in your dorm. I have my own personal list, and one of the things that is on my list is oatmeal.

I love oatmeal. I love oatmeal posssibly more than Bert from Sesame Street loves oatmeal.

I guess Bert doesn’t believe me!

Oatmeal is plain, bland, and boring…and that exactly why I love it. It’s not complicated! College life is already way too complicated, with classes, extra-curriculars, homework, jobs, social events, dorm events…I could keep going! Sometimes you just need something simple, to balance out all the crazy in life, and that’s one of the reasons I like having oatmeal around.

Life is crazy and complicated. Oatmeal is not :)

I honesty like eating plain oatmeal, and to me, complicating a perfectly good bowl of oatmeal is a faux pas. a little fruit or cinnamon sugar is fine once in a while, but in my opinion, too many toppings ruins the oatmeal. Once, I was in NDH on a Sunday morning, and I decided to experiment with the oatmeal station. I put in tons of nuts, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and dried fruit. When I sat down to eat it, though, the oatmeal was way too sweet, and there were way too may textures than what a bowl of oatmeal should ever have. I wished that I had never added any toppings in the first place.

Completely plain oatmeal- for me, this is where it’s at!

Oatmeal is also simple because it is easy to make! I do like to cook, but when I wake up for an 8:00AM class (not 8:20- I actually have an 8:00AM class this semester), I want breakfast to be quick and easy, so oatmeal is ideal. For quick or instant oats, you just add water, microwave, stir and eat!

Before an early morning class, or any day of the week, I want breakfast that is satisfying and filling without making me completely stuffed. Oatmeal saves the day again! It has a pretty decent serving of whole grains, so I’m not immediately hungry afterwards. To me, oatmeal is a perfect breakfast, but it has even more potential. I even eat oatmeal for dinner when I’m not feeling great or not up to anything complicated. Plus, oatmeal is a key ingredient in oatmeal raisin, oatmeal chocolate chip and oatmeal scotchies (butterscotch chip)!

Yes please!!!

Oatmeal is one of the my favorite breakfast and comfort foods. I would be very sad if all my oatmeal disappeared overnight. Save your humble pie; I’ll take a humble bowl of oatmeal instead.
