Madelyn Steurer: HCND’s Resident Fashion Guru

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Notre Dame chapter.

Describe yourself in 3 words.

Ambitious.  Stylish.  Brave.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

Well, let’s see. I’ll be 29 years old (YIKES), so I’ll be out on my grind trying to be a total #GirlBoss. I see myself having a cup of hot tea at the Conde Nast headquarters working for Vogue as a fashion and beauty editor. I’ll probably go home to a cute pup named Coco Chanel and a supportive, hard-working husband. I’ll spend my free time planning on how I’m going to build my own fashion brand. You know, casual things of that nature.

What is your style?

I’d describe it as Parisian chic. I love how the French are so effortless. They WANT it to look like they applied their makeup in 5 minutes and didn’t brush their hair. The wind is their hairbrush and a nice nap creates the perfect highlight on their cheeks. Lately, I’ve been wearing a lot of earthy tones like green, brown, black, and navy. My closet consists of a lot of tailored coats, lightweight blazers, lacy tanks, and the skinniest of skinny jeans. Ooh la la!

Why do you love being a part of HCND?

I found my passion for creating fashion content through HCND, and it has given me an outlet to tell girls about my favorite trends. We support each other and encourage each other to geek out about our passions. I also love being Social Media Director.

If you could travel to one place, where would it be and why?

Paris. Why? As Audrey Hepburn would say, it’s always a good idea. I feel most at home when I’m there. It’s like it was meant to be. The architecture inspires me. The people intrigue me. It’s simply romantic.

What is something you are super passionate about?

I’m an incredibly passionate feminist. Women deserve to be equals to men. Women can be intelligent, beautiful, sexual, brave, and ambitious all at the same time. So let us be.

What is your favorite book, and why?

Eleanor and Park. I’m a sucker for romance and it was just the sweetest little story. I get caught up in stories like that. I like falling in love with characters and living vicariously through their romance. I just really enjoy love.

What is your favorite place on campus?

It’s a toss-up between the Snite Museum of Art and Bond Hall. I love going to the Snite alone to de-stress and reflect on art. It’s an amazing treasure on campus that a lot of people don’t know much about. I can stand in front of one painting for 20 minutes and be happy just thinking and getting inspiration. I love the architecture building’s library. Obviously, it’s a gorgeous building. There’s something about the white interior that makes my heart literally burst. I can’t describe how it makes me feel. It’s so nerdy but it’s so aesthetically pleasing that I will walk all the way across campus just to study there. Maybe I’ll geek out and write an article about it one day.
