Listen Up: 7 Podcasts For Your Spring Break

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Notre Dame chapter.

One of the very first articles that got me hooked on Her Campus Notre Dame was “Why You Should Be Listening to Podcasts”. I had never given podcasts much thought in the past; they had always seemed a bit boring. This article convinced me otherwise and, at this point in my freshman year, listening to podcasts has become part of my daily routine. Whether I’m walking to class or running on the treadmill, podcasts offer the perfect alternative for when my Spotify playlist is running low on inspiration. In addition to being entertaining and informative, they are incredibly useful for when you’re traveling. Instead of having to drop serious dough on updating your iTunes library, all podcasts are free and don’t require data to use. So, whether you’re flying somewhere tropical or driving cross-country, here are seven podcasts to take for a spin this spring break.

Creative Pep Talk

Hosted by professional illustrator (and Indiana native!) Andy Miller, Creative Pep Talk finds its focus in giving advice to aspiring artists. His life lessons are applicable to everyone as well, with topics ranging from the importance of hard work, to dealing with the haters, to making people care about your work. I definitely recommend Creative Pep Talk for anyone with a wild imagination!

The New Yorker: Out Loud

Have you ever wondered what goes into designing a museum? What about the state of women’s roles in science fiction films?  The famous commentary and criticism magazine tackles these issues and many more in their Out Loud podcast, which chronicles modern America and its relationship with science, language, arts, and media.

Bon Appétit

This is the perfect podcast for foodies everywhere! Indulge a little and listen as professional chefs discuss topics such as the best meal they’ve ever had and the most popular brunch items they’ve ever served. These episodes will definitely give you the motivation to become the next Iron Chef SDH!

Joblogues

Worrying about your future and stressing about your job search are totally typical pastimes for college students. Joblogues is here to help you. Hosted by best friends Joymarie and Cortney, this podcast blends humor and candid career advice for perfectly uplifting episodes.

Presidential

In a special podcast created specifically for the 2016 election year, The Washington Post is making American history exciting and accessible. Every Presidential podcast episode traces an American president’s time in office. Get ready for the polls to open with these fascinating tales of presidencies past!

Anna Faris is Unqualified

I’ll leap at any chance to get love advice from Aubrey Plaza, so Anna Faris is Unqualified is a favorite podcast of mine. On the show hosted by Chris Pratt’s wife and all-around funny lady Anna Faris, celebrities ranging from Lisa Kurow to Lance Bass are invited to share relationship anecdotes and offer dating advice. Get ready for a good laugh!

Ask Me Another

For listeners looking for a more interactive podcast, NPR’s Ask Me Another packs brainteasers, comedy, music, and trivia into a one-hour game show extravaganza. Play along with some of your favorite celebrities, such as Saturday Night Live’s Taran Killam and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt’s Ellie Kemper.

All of these podcasts are available online and through the iPhone Podcast app – happy listening!

Lydia Costello is a freshman at ND studying English and Film, Television, Theater with a concentration in film. She hails from the sprawling metropolis of Chesterton, Indiana (although she might tell you Chicago in an effort to sound more interesting), but is a proud Lyons lady while at home under the dome. When she's not blogging, writing for HCND, or being a pun master extraordinaire, Lydia can be found live tweeting awards shows and episodes of Downton Abbey over at @lydia_costelllo, taking Buzzfeed quizzes, asking to pet other people's dogs, and lying to herself about making Pinterest recipes. She's always up for a good cup of coffee and good conversation (if lost, please return to Starbucks). Keep calm and Go Irish!
