A List of Shows for Your Midterm Woes

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Notre Dame chapter.

As we approach midterm week (or weeks, depending on your schedule), it is often nice to have a great TV show to help take your mind off of the stress of the season. Below is a list of shows for every mood, why I love them, and where to stream them.

This show follows the daily life of a family as they work through the trials of living in America today. Whether it be race, adoption, loss, love, marriage, or the many other contemporary issues that we face, this show provides a touching and heartfelt perspective. I started watching just a few weeks ago, and the honesty and depth of each character continue to draw me in. With each episode, I feel like I learn something new about the characters, mirroring the process of learning about those you love in daily life. The complexity that the actors are able to capture in each moment is incredible. Warning: this show will make you cry. So grab a box of tissues, curl up with some ice cream, and enjoy!

2. The Crown – stream on Netflix

The Crown is everything. Love story. Period piece. Family drama. If you have not started watching yet, you should. Everything about The Crown is superb. According to the copious amount of interviews that I have watched, the show even hired a former staff member of the palace to confirm each and every detail to ensure complete accuracy. From the costumes to the sets, to the acting itself, each seemingly minute detail comes together to create a true masterpiece. It is also fascinating to see historical events play out from the perspective of Buckingham Palace. I have completed both seasons already, and can barely wait to see what the future holds for the royal family.

3. Chef’s Table – stream on Netflix

Despite the name, you do not have to be a “foodie” to love this show. One of the magnificent things about Chef’s Table is that it brings a different, more personal dimension to the food that is eaten at high-end restaurants. The stories of the chefs splash onto the screen and color the food that they create with their personal histories. Besides being a beautiful demonstration of the humanity of the people around us, the show is beautifully shot, with incredible images of the food, restaurants, and locations that these chefs create within. An added bonus is that this particular show does not need to be watched in any specific order so that you can match the chef’s story to your mood of the moment.

4. Call the Midwife – stream on Netflix

This show is poignant, gentle, and incredibly deep. Following the lives of several midwives around East London in the 1950s, each episode tackles issues that transcend time and space from birth and death, to the importance of the life in between. This series is also based on the memoirs of a midwife from London, so the added dimension that I could continue my obsession with a book adds to the appeal.

Hello! My name is Nadia Tiy and I am a junior studying Russian and Education, Schooling, and Society. I am originally from a VERY small town in Minnesota, but I am happy to call Notre Dame my current home. I love all things involving books and coffee, so I can most often be found in Waddick's with a large coffee and Russian novel in hand. When I am not reading for my Russian lit classes, I am in DPAC stage managing, running (or walking) the lakes, binge watching Netflix with ice cream, or catching up with my friends (over coffee of course).
