If you are anything like me then you are always trying to find new television shows to watch so that you can avoid doing homework. It is easy to make an excuse to not write a paper when you have just one more episode to watch. Well recently I watched Get Organized with The Home Edit and not only was it a much needed distraction, but now I want to re-do my dorm room and my entire house over the 10 weeks of winter break this year.

The Home Edit is a company founded by two friends with a goal “to reinvent traditional organizing,a nd merge it with design and interior styling”. The dynamic duo are Clea and Joanna and they help organize everything from kitchens to closets to bedrooms. The most interesting part of the show is that half of the show is dedicated to working with a celebrity and the rest of the time goes to helping regular clients in everyday situations.

Some of their celebrity appearances include Khloe Kardashian, Kane Brown, and Reese Witherspoon. I have always fantasized about having the wardrobe of Elle Woods or Madeline Mackenzie, so seeing Joanna and Clea design a closet with all of Reese’s memorabilia was so incredible. They were even kind enough to give the stuffed Bruiser a spot of his own.

The pair truly transform people’s homes and spaces with the help of their team. They utilize products from The Container Store ,and they even have their own custom labels. In one episode, Clea and Joanna helped to transform a room in Eva Longoria’s house into her son’s big kid bedroom. I can only imagine how nerve-wracking it is to be a parent and create a space that works for your little one. Since Clea and Joanna have kids of their own,  they were both ready to accomplish the task. Eva was awe-stricken and you could tell how much it meant to her to have such an organized space for her son to grow into over the years.

The most important thing that I learned while watching The Home Edit on Netflix was that you sometimes need to think outside of the box to become more organized. This applies to your space, but also to your routine and life in general. If you feel cluttered or overwhelmed, then take a step back and think: How can I change my plan or space to better suit my needs and calm your anxiety?

This does not mean that you need to get rid of everything, you just need to reevaluate. The other day, I was writing an essay and began to feel overwhelmed. I remembered what Clea and Joanna taught me on their show – just breathe and think about the best way to organize for myself. I was very close to scrapping most of the essay, but instead I decided to rework it to situate it in a way that would work for me and to meet the expectations of my professor. Ultimately the paper got done and my anxiety was resolved – mostly because of what I learned on the show. So now I have a real reason to use Netflix as an excuse for not doing work because it helps me learn life lessons as well.
