Holiday Week: How to Absolutely *Slay* Your Gift-Giving Game This Season

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Notre Dame chapter.

Christmas time is super festive and fun, but it can be stressful if you’re struggling to come up with great gifts for the people in your life. It can be a great time to show appreciation for the people you love, but it’s hard to find the perfect gift especially—when you take into account financial factors.

But a gift doesn’t have to be super expensive to be special, it just has to be thoughtful! So here are a couple of tips to make everyone in your life swoon at their gift this year:

What do they like?

This is usually my first question. Start brainstorming what you know about the person, what movies and TV shows they like, hobbies they enjoy, collections they have, etc.

Have they mentioned wanting or needing anything recently?

Wrack your brain and think hard about if they’ve mentioned needing or wanting anything recently. This usually happens in a passing comment like “Ugh, I need new gloves” or “Hey, this movie is cool.” Not only will you know that they’ll actually like the gift, they’ll be so impressed that you listen to and remember what they say.

Browse Pinterest

This seems cliché, but Pinterest is a really good place to start looking for ideas. Oftentimes, I won’t use an exact gift from Pinterest, but something I see will spark an idea and lead me to an absolutely killer present.

Once you’ve got a good idea of what to get a person, ask yourself the following questions:

Are they going to use it?

Getting them something they will actually use, wear or value is crucial, and asking this question is a good way to make sure you’re getting them something they’ll like. If you can picture them wearing it or using it, it’s probably a good gift.

Will it take up space?

You don’t want to get them something that will make their life inconvenient (a.k.a. anything too big and breakable or something they already have a lot of).

Will it make them happy?

If you can picture them being super happy when they open it, you’ve got a great gift.
