Covet Fashion: The Trendy App That Will Transform Your Style

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Notre Dame chapter.

In attending a Catholic university, it can be assumed that many of us, at one time or another, have heard the Biblical phrase: Thou shall not covet thy neighbor’s goods. However, designer Rachel Zoe, with the help of gaming firm CrowdStar, has created an app that encourages you to do just that. Covet Fashion, in its most basic form, is the adult version of every dress-up game you enjoyed as a little girl, but with some major additions that will turn you from a simple gamer into a major stylist in a matter of minutes.

If the premise of the game is not enough, the sleek, high fashion design of the layout will immediately draw you in. Upon opening the app, you will find that the manga animation and bubblegum color scheme of traditional dress-up games have been replaced with tall, beautiful models and classic shades of white and grey, reminiscent of a runway. This home page displays the top looks created by other users around the world for a specific event, as well as the top closet values and style scores in your area.

The object of this interactive game is to enter events in which you are required to create a look for a specific occasion. These events range from Romantic Prague Escape to Extreme Ice Climber, each equipped with its own set of outfit requirements and restrictions. Throughout this process, you may browse the virtual store for the pieces necessary to perfect your look.

However, what separates this step from that of other games is that Covet’s virtual fashions are animated versions of actual designer clothing.  From BCBG to Rachel Zoe, Covet has it all. The beauty of this is that if you find yourself absolutely enchanted by the look you created, (trust me it happens), you can find all the pieces online and make your creation a reality.

If you find yourself unsure if you are ready to take your look from virtual to reality, you can simply wait for the results of the event you have entered. Each look is rated from a scale of one to five stars by other Covet users around the world. In voting, your look is set against those of other users. Each voter is to choose which look is better based on preference.

I often take the occasion and overall appeal of the look into account when voting; however, I would be lying if I said I never simply clicked without looking in order to get voting out of the way (as it is a requirement for all users). Though voting can at some times feel like an unwanted chore, if you have the right amount of imagination, you can assume the importance and power of a Project Runway judge from the comfort and ease of your own home.

Now, for the moment of truth, the results. I can confidently say that it is nearly impossible to know what your results will be prior to receiving them. I have had my fair share of frustration in receiving three stars for a look that I believed was a five. However, I have also experienced the pure joy and accomplishment of receiving five stars, and I can tell you that the time spent is absolutely worth it (the above picture is that of my first five star look which I immediately sent to my mother). This step contributes to the general fun of the game because it can either make or break you.

With the knowledge that real people are viewing your looks, it encourages you to act as a real designer and focus on being the most fashion forward version of yourself.  I can personally attest to the fact that Covet can indeed make you a more fashionable person. I have often recreated looks from Covet in my day to day life and I have become much more daring in my everyday fashion choices. I would recommend this game to anyone who enjoys fashion, creativity, or is simply looking for a fun way to pass the time.
