Celebrating V-day Single Ladies Style

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Notre Dame chapter.

I don’t think I’ll ever understand why some girls shudder with any mention of Valentine’s Day. There’s nothing more unattractive than a girl constantly whining or complaining about her lack of a significant other during February. Sure, it’s a somewhat made-up holiday loosely tied to St. Valentine to celebrate loved ones, but who defines “loved ones?” I think the social norm of celebrating Valentine’s Day with a boyfriend or girlfriend exclusively is lame. Why not celebrate with the people who are always there for you, through relationship and break-up?

So if you start to feel sorry for yourself because you don’t have a boyfriend this weekend, stop, drop the cookie dough and/or ice cream, turn off that sad Taylor Swift song, and take a look around. Your best friends love you just as much if not more than any future significant other. So quit moping, and go celebrate this weekend in true Beyoncé “Single Ladies” fashion!

1.  Thursday: Secret Valentine Grams

Start off the weekend Thursday with Secret Valentine Grams! Single or not, all of your friends can participate. Similar to Secret Santa, each person draws a name randomly. Write cute notes, make creative Valentines, or buy candy and leave them secretly for whichever friend you randomly picked throughout the week. There’s nothing more exciting than reading a hand-written note from a friend!

2.  Friday: Fifty Shades of Grey

Lucky for us, Fifty Shades of Grey just happens to be premiering this week! You still have time to read the book before it comes to theatres this Friday.

Sit back, and enjoy the beauty that is Jamie Dornan, who’ll be playing the character of Christian Grey. Gather a group of your closest friends now to buy your tickets ahead of time before they sell-out.

3.  Saturday: Friends-tine Meal

Who says that Valentine’s Day is reserved for tables of two? Make a group reservation at a nice restaurant this Saturday evening while your not-so-single friends are out with their significant others. Splurge on that chocolate cake dessert because it’s a holiday of course!

4.  Saturday Night: Ladies Wine Night

If you’re of age, celebrate with a wine night after dinner. Have each person buy a different bottle of fancier wine, and everyone can try a bit of each. Use wine night as a pre-game for a girls’ night at CJ’s! Spend the rest of your night dancing to Taylor Swift surrounded by your best friends, and getting drunk in love.

5.  Sunday: Weekend Catch-up

The crew reunites! Over brunch or dinner, catch-up with your friends in relationships who missed out on all the single ladies fun.

Valentine’s Day doesn’t have to be all about romantic couples so make plans or reservations now to celebrate with your closest friends who’ll be around through thick and thin. In the words of a previous Badin Hall Frosh-O chair, “College isn’t always about finding your husband; it’s about finding your bridesmaids.” Take this advice to heart, and focus on the relationships you’ll have with your Notre Dame friends for years to come.
