Campus Cutie: Jack Riedy ’17

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Notre Dame chapter.

As we all settle into our summer routines, HCND recently caught up with Campus Cutie, Jack Riedy who is a proud second-year resident of Morrissey Manor and a self-proclaimed music enthusiast. Completely via iMessage, we were able to ask this sophomore marketing major a little bit about his favorite things and what, exactly, is on his ND bucket list. Thanks, Jack!

Name: Jack Riedy

Dorm: Morrissey Manor

Year: Sophomore

Hometown: Palatine, IL, a town with 69, 000 people and no movie theatre

Major: Marketing

Relationship Status: Single

Any prospects?

Not at the moment!

What do you look for in a girl?

I always look for a good sense of humor. The people I love spending time with are the ones that make me laugh. I also like girls that are open to new things, whether that’s movies, music, food, or experiences. Spontaneity is always a plus.

Favorite thing about Morrissey?

My favorite thing about the dorm is the common room, which is great for getting everyone out of their rooms and building friendships.

Least favorite thing about Morrissey?

The miniscule size of the rooms.

Describe your Frosh-O experience in three words.

Chaotic, reassuring, welcoming.

I understand you’re a big fan of music. In your opinion, what’s the most underrated band out there?

I try to spread the word about Blood Orange as much as possible. They released this incredible album called Cupid Deluxe at the end of last year, and it’s an amazing fusion of R&B, funk, pop, and hip-hop. One song is a vintage Prince-style jam, another has an old-school breakbeat rap solo, but it all meshes together into a cohesive sound.

Favorite Starburst color and why?

I know this is out of the ordinary, but orange is my favorite. I’m a sucker for citrus flavors.

If you had to use one social media site for the rest of your life, what would it be and why?

I would have to stick with Twitter. I like that everything is relatively temporary, and I love amusing myself with stupid jokes based around hashtags or current events.

On a typical Saturday night, where can we find you?

I’m a big fan of getting friends together for loud music and party games. Cards Against Humanity, Game of Things, Taboo: anything where the winner is totally subjective.

Favorite class you’ve taken so far and why?

I took a short story writing class last semester that I loved. We analyzed published short stories from famous authors and critiqued each other’s writing. By the end of the semester I had written three stories, one of which was published in Notre Dame’s literary journal. It was nice to finish a class with something concrete that other people might actually be interested in reading.

What is on the top of your ND bucket list?

My dream is to be someone’s date to the St. Ed’s Yacht Dance. Beyond that, I hope to continue my streak of attending every hip-hop night at Legends.

What do you see yourself doing in 10 years?

In 10 years, I hope to have a job at a marketing firm and an apartment in the beautiful city of Chicago. Of course, I’ll be coming back to ND for football games, but I can’t wait to live in a more urban environment.

Now that you’ve finished your first year at ND, do you have any advice for incoming freshmen?

Don’t be afraid to try new things! I know it’s a cliché, but it’s the best advice. Especially with the Internet, it’s easy to stay in your room and cling to Netflix and talking to your friends from back home. Once you realize that everyone is in the same self-conscious boat, it becomes a lot easier to start conversations and try things you normally wouldn’t have.

Thanks, Jack! Good luck with sophomore year!
