Behind the Scenes with John Gibbons

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Notre Dame chapter.

I sat down with John Gibbons, a student employee for the Athletics Marketing Department! He may have given you that free t-shirt the last time you went to a volleyball game, or picked you for a contest at halftime at a hockey game. Either way, he’s on the inside of all the fun promotions put on at Athletics Events.

The Basics

Name: John Gibbons

Dorm: Knott Hall

Hometown: Cary, Illinois

Major: Program of Liberal Studies and Economics

Favorite building on campus: O’Shag

The Job:

What exactly do you do for your job?

We run all of the promotions put together for the game. Before the game, we hand out the free t-shirts, posters, or other promotions that the Athletic Marketing Department provides.

Do you anything during the games?

We facilitate the contests and other games that go on during the little breaks or timeouts.

What sports do you work?

I work the volleyball and hockey games. The contests usually depend on the sport.

What’s your favorite contest?

During the hockey games, we put on a game called “Slap shot.” Three contestants shoot three pucks each from center ice and try to get it through one of the holes into the net. If they get it, they can win a variety of prizes.

What’s the best prize you’ve give out?

One time a student won free textbooks for a semester, which is pretty cool.

Why did you decide to apply for this job?

I’m a big Notre Dame sports fan so I was excited to be involved in the Athletic Marketing Department.

What’s the biggest perk of the job?

I get to go on the ice or the court during games which a lot of people never get to do. Oh and I wear a really cool headset that impressed my girlfriend and all her friends. (laughs)

What’s your favorite sport to watch?

Baseball. I used to play in high school so I love it.

What can students do to get put up on the big screen?

I actually have no control over that, but get really excited and I’m sure the camera man will find you!

Do you participate in any athletics as a player?

I play catcher for the Knott baseball team, and my broomball made a run at the ‘ship this year.

Thanks John!
