7 Reasons to be Grateful to Have Sisters

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Notre Dame chapter.

My last few pieces have been all about boys and their place in my life, so I think it’s time for me to show a little love to my sisters and point out to all of you how great it is to have girls like this in your life. And I’m sure my dad won’t complain about having another opportunity to quote White Christmas and say “Sisters!” when he reads this article.

You will never run out of clothes.

Having a sister means that you also have an extra wardrobe, which is even better if your sister happens to be older than you. I regularly wear things that my next-oldest sis Laura wore when she was in college and they’re always a big hit. The not-so-fun part of this system is that I’m expected to share my clothes with her when she comes home to visit, but it’s fun for both of us to be able to dress outside our fallback styles.

You’ll always have someone to gossip about celebrities with.

There have been several monumental occurrences in the celebrity world that I’ve read about on People’s website and immediately texted my oldest sister Jennie to discuss, more specifically when George Clooney FINALLY got engaged or when Kimye announced to the world that they named their first child North West. A sister is the perfect person to commiserate with about your fave celeb couple breaking up or to make fun of Gwyneth Paltrow and her “conscious uncoupling” nonsense.

You can have adventures with a sister that a brother would never be down for.

While hanging with the bros basically ensures that you’ll have a great dining experience and probably get in some good exercise too, a sister offers a somewhat more refined and, at times, more appealing variety of activities. Whether it’s shopping at J. Crew, walking around a park, or coordinating an online Sephora order to get the best value, sisters indulge in the kinds of things that girls bond the closest over.

Your appreciation for Taylor Swift as fantastic background music increases exponentially.

Every time Jennie comes home for Christmas or I go to visit her in DC, we bake something. And every time we begin the process, she asks me to play some Taylor Swift as background music. TSwift really is the best artist for the job; her music is never too loud, bass-heavy, or flat-out obnoxious to get in some good cooking and conversation. And it’s nice not to have to listen to redneck country ballads or eardrum-shattering rap like you inevitably have to with a brother.

You have a built-in best friend and confidante.

Brothers are definitely protective of their sisters, but a guy will never understand the problems a girl goes through as well as a sister does. A sister is the best person to go to when you’re struggling with one of your friends and or having trouble reading a guy. Chances are they’ve been through a similar situation and are able to advise you with a wisdom one of your peers cannot.

You are guaranteed to always have someone who will check your makeup and hair for you before going out in public.

If anyone can notice a stray hair or a slight smudge in your eyeliner, it’s a sister. They know how to look for the details that a girl considers to be the most important aspect of her appearance and make sure that you look your best before venturing out from home.

You don’t have to look outside your home for a role model.

Both of my older sisters have taken advantage of every opportunity they’ve been given to see the world, learn something, or have a new experience. Whether it was to study abroad, go to grad school, or even to take an internship in an unfamiliar place, Jennie and La ventured forth with enthusiasm and always encourage me to take advantage of the opportunities ND offers to grow as a person in a variety of ways.
