“I can’t go out tonight, it is way too cold.” Mutterings like this are being heard far and wide across campus this weekend, with such cold weather actually hurting anyone daring to step outside. The weather may stop you from venturing out, but frigid air should stop you from enjoying your night. With the negative wind-chill temperatures outside and no end of the cold days of winter in sight, there has never been a better time to call it a girl’s night in and curl up and watch a movie. In honor of the single digit temperature reading on my phone at the moment, I came up with six perfect movies to bundle up to with a cup of hot chocolate and some fresh popcorn.
1. Cool Runnings
Starting with a bit of a throwback, the Disney movie Cool Runnings will leave you nostalgic for the good old Disney original movie classics. The story of a team of guys from the warm and sunny Jamaica taking on the winter sport, bobsledding, you will be left with a sense of courage in facing any winter blues that come your way. You might even get some inspiration in different ways to take advantage of this freezing weather. Who’s up for some cross-campus bobsledding?
2. Frozen
Although this movie isn’t technically out yet, we all know there are ways to get ahold of it online or otherwise. We can all pretend we are Elsa for a night and sing along with our friends that the “cold never bothered me anyway,” even though we might not truly believe this. With Disney finally making a movie that questions finding true love in a day, you might even be motivated to go somewhere cold and find your own winter-hunk, like Kristoff, to haphazardly take on an adventure.
3. Happy Feet
Who doesn’t love penguins? Especially cute, little dancing and singing ones. If these little guys can live in yearlong wintery conditions comparable to what we are experiencing, then who are we to complain. Happy Feet will make you want to brush that snow off your shoulder in the form of a dance move, and dance and sing your night away. Although we might not all be used to the cold like the penguins are, we can still learn that having a good time isn’t inhinited by any stupid weather.
4. The Ultimate Christmas Present
So Christmas might have already passed, along with all decorations and mentions of Santa Claus put away and forgotten, but this movie definitely goes along with depicting crazy weather conditions. Another Disney Original throwback to spend your night with, The Ultimate Christmas Present questions whether someone here is actually controlling this weather through some weird machine. The two girls in the movie actually stole from Santa to get a snow day, which I’m sure any of us would do at this point. Let’s all just pray that if someone did steal and break a weather machine, they fix it back to tropical conditions stat!
5. The Day after Tomorrow
Is the extreme cold we are facing right now the new Ice Age, or have I just been watching this movie too much? While conditions outside might not be as bad as those in the movie, the question still arises, at least for me, whether even colder weather lies ahead. This movie will make you glad we don’t have it this bad. And I think we could all take a tip from Jake Gyllenhaal’s character burning books for firewood. Maybe our textbooks will work just as well?
6. Groundhog Day
Last, but certainly not least, Groundhog Day will leave you truly glad you are where you are and not in the shoes of Phil, the main character. While this movie might be a little old, it is just the thing to watch with cold days seeming to stay. I know that if I had to live a day over and over again, I would definitely want it to at least be warm, unlike what Phil has to go through in the movie. Groundhog Day will at least give you hope that spring will eventually come, and we will, however unlikely, see sun and warmth again.
