5 Methods of Productive Procrastination

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Notre Dame chapter.

It’s finally that dreaded time of year once again. Your favorite seniors are days from graduation, you’re saying your goodbyes to all of your friends for the summer, and on top of that emotional rollercoaster, you’re forced to take final exams. Soon anxiety will set in, and you’ll find yourself procrastinating online for hours. So why not turn this unavoidable procrastination into something productive?

1. Do your CIFS

Make those annoying reminder e-mails stop, and take some time to complete your Notre Dame CIFS. Academic departments take these course evaluations very seriously, so take your time and answer honestly. Bonus, you’ll be able to access your final grades over a week sooner if you complete them all.

2. Pack your room

Beginning this year, you are required to vacate campus 24 hours after your last final. Save yourself some stress, and do the organizing and packing a little bit at a time. Study a chapter, and then spend 10 minutes packing a box as a break. You’ll thank yourself when you are exhausted, but all packed after your last exam.

3. Bake

If you can’t study for yourself, why not help a friend who is just as stressed as you? Take a study break to bake some cookies from the Huddle, and then share them with your friends. They will be forever thankful for your generosity, and you’ll be snacking on fresh baked goods all afternoon. It’s a win-win situation.

4. Write thank-you notes

Did you have an amazing professor, an impactful RA, or a TA that helped you every step of the way during your chemistry lab? Take a few minutes to write him or her a handwritten thank-you note. Your note will be much appreciated as these people work so hard everyday for your sake. Plus, you never know when you might need his or her help in the future with a recommendation or as a sponsor for a grant proposal.

5. Call your family

Finally, don’t forget about your family back home! Tell them your finals schedule so they know when you’ll be most stressed during the week. Not only will they be the best form of stress relief, but they will love to know you took time out of your busy finals schedule for them.

Don’t forget to hit the library between all this productive procrastination! Go Irish, Beat Finals!
