Your Winter Problems, Solved!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Northwestern chapter.

Winter is rough. It wears us down physically and mentally, leaving us in a heap with no motivation whatsoever. While the season can wear us down, here at HC we provide collegiettes with everything they need to make it through any problem — despite freezing temperatures and less daylight. Here are some solutions to help you through the winter months!

Problem: Dry skin

Solution: Carry around lotion! It’s easy to forget to lotion up if it’s not around you, but keeping a small bottle on you can seriously help. For added benefit, put it on after your shower to lock in moisture. Drinking alcohol also dehydrates your skin, so cutting back a little in the wintertime can help keep skin looking fresh and healthy.

Problem: Frozen bike locks

Solution: Invest in some lubricant like WD40 that drives out moisture while lubricating the lock. Reapply every few weeks and you’re good to go!

Problem: No motivation once the sun goes down

Solution: Although it can be hard to wake up early, there are studies showing that early risers are not only more productive, but also happier and healthier. Try waking up five minutes earlier every day and start getting work done in the morning when you are the freshest and the most focused.

Problem: Dull hair

Solution: Try a hair mask with avocado or other oils to rejuvenate your locks when they start drying out. Showering less frequently can also help your hair retain its natural oils and stay shiny when the weather isn’t playing nice.

Problem: Sickness

Solution: The common solutions work: get your flu shot, and wash your hands! Sickness runs rampant in the winter, and if you’re in contact with a lot of people you’re especially vulnerable. You can also try remedies such as Cold-Eeze that prevent and shorten colds. To help out your immune system, make sure you are getting enough sleep, hydrating and eating nutritious foods.

Problem: It’s too cold to get your workout in

Solution: Now is the time to try all of those indoor classes and YouTube videos! There is a huge wealth of resources for workouts you can do indoors or right in your room. Some examples are HIIT workouts, yoga and pilates. The plus side is the exercise will chase away the winter blues with an increase in endorphins, even with just 15 minutes set aside in your day.

Problem: No cute outfits when it’s below freezing

Solution: Play with layering, scarves, and sweater and jacket combos! If you’re missing your favorite summer pieces, incorporate them into your wardrobe with some fleece-lined tights. Try sweaters over your favorite dress shirt for a preppy winter outfit, or layer a cardigan over your favorite spring tank for an easy transition from cold weather to hot classrooms.
