Welcome Our New Editor, Amanda Oppold!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Northwestern chapter.

Year: Junior
Major: Journalism
Hometown: Hastings, Minnesota

When/how did you get started with Her Campus Northwestern?
I got started with Her Campus as a sophomore. My freshman year I was kinda the bum Medill student, I accumulated other non-journalism activities. So then sophomore year I felt like I had everything else in order and wanted to add some writing.

What do you like about being on the Her Campus Northwestern team?
What attracted me to Her Campus in the first place was that a lot of it was exactly like all of the magazines I really loved like Glamour, Cosmpolitan and Marie Claire. There was nothing else like it on campus, nothing even close and I was so excited that I didn’t have to force myself into some serious-to-the-death publication, that’s just not my style. I like the chance to really choose what I write about and the option to write more hard-hitting stuff, or to do an article on hairstyles. Plus writing/interviewing the campus cuties is a great way to give your guy friends an ego boost or meet some great and adorable guys.

What other activities are you involved in on campus?
I’m a part of the equestrian team, I am an intern at Northwestern Magazine-the one that gets sent to all our parents, I work for a Medill Professor, and I am a member of Zeta Tau Alpha where I am the Parent and Alumni Relations Chair and manage a night of recruitment.

What hobbies do you have/ what do you do in your free time?
In my free time I really like to bake-I love making cookies and cupcakes and mixing and matching recipes or making up my own. I also really love to read. I’m reading a biography on Walt Disney right now and its fascinating. I also love to bike.

What piece of advice would you give to incoming freshman women?
I would say take your time. I felt like I was slacking freshman year because I wasn’t involved in a million things yet, but because I held back and was selective about what I joined I found places and activities that are the right fit for me. The other piece of advice would be to be open to meeting any and everyone. Freshman year is crazy and you’re probably going to feel homesick and crazy lonely and the only way you’ll get through that is by feeling like you have connections and relationships here. So even if something sounds like it might not be for you, give it a chance. I thought I would never be a sorority girl but I gave it a chance and now my sisters are a great friend group that offer different things than my equestrian team friends do or my freshmen dorm friends do.

What are you hoping to bring to Her Campus Northwestern this year?
I’m hoping to bring a lot of enthusiasm. Because of our uniqueness on campus I think we really can reach a lot of women and do some great things.
