Top Trends to Swap Out for Spring 2013

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Northwestern chapter.

With February coming to an end and spring steadily approaching, it’s time to clean out your closet to get ready for this season’s newest trends. In order to maximize your already limited college closet space, try purging your wardrobe of last year’s biggest trends that will definitely not be making a comeback anytime soon. Here are some 2012 trends to swap out for the hottest trends of spring 2013.

1) Crop tops–>Cutouts

If you’re looking for a way to bare some skin, opt for revealing patches of skin near the chest or waist with the cutout trend rather than exposing your midriff in a crop top. Seen on the runways of Narciso Rodriguez, Emilio Pucci, and Alexander Wang, this up-and-coming trend is a great way to achieve a sexy look without feeling overexposed.

2) Neon–>Black & White

If 2012 was the year of neon madness, 2013 is the year of the more minimal black and white trend. Seen in the latest collections of Marc Jacobs, Jill Sander, and Céline, the extremely wearable and sophisticated black and white trend is a far cry from the loud colors that dominated in 2012.

3) Statement shoulders–>Statement Stripes

If you’re someone looking to make a statement, achieve a bold look by swapping out your shoulder heavy clothes for striped tops and bottoms. Seen in the shows of Michael Kors, Dolce and Gabanna, and Vivienne Westwood, this new trend proves that whether skinny or thick, horizontal or vertical, stripes can make just as loud of a statement as embellished or padded shoulders.

4) Fringe–>Ruffles

If the playful, bohemian fringe trend is something you loved, try changing it up with the new ruffle trend. Seen in the collections of Balenciaga, J.W. Andeson, Gucci, Givenchy, and Chloé, refined ruffles are an easy way to show off a more feminine look.
