Top 5 TV Shows Airing Right Now

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Northwestern chapter.

Looking for a new TV show to use as an excuse to avoid homework? Here is my list of the best shows currently airing on television (but most of them can be found on Hulu or Netflix, because who even has cable anymore?).

1. The Good Doctor

Near the end of summer, I finally caved into the hype and watched The Good Doctor, and it might have been the best decision I’ve made all year. The show centers around a surgical resident, Shaun Murphy, who has both autism and savant syndrome. The Good Doctor is a series with everything going for it – it made me laugh and cry, sometimes at the same time. If you like the series, make sure to watch the original South Korean version as well.

2. This Is Us

When it comes to talking about how much I adore This Is Us, I am often speechless. Since I became a fan of the show last year, I honestly think it has skyrocketed to the top of my favorite TV series list. In fact, I adore This Is Us so much that I plan to save up all the episodes and watch the first part of the new season over winter break. It’s impossible to describe the plot of This Is Us in just a few words, so all I can say is you have to at least watch one episode to understand why it’s so life-changing.

3. Grey’s Anatomy

Grey’s Anatomy has been my favorite TV show for years – in fact, I’ve watched the entire series at least six times through since I was in middle school. I even thought for a brief moment during the eighth grade that I would become a surgeon. If you couldn’t tell, I’m a Grey’s Anatomy addict. The show is now in its 15th season, which some might say means it’s nearing the end of its life. However, I believe Grey’s Anatomy is like a fine wine, only getting better with age.

4. How To Get Away With Murder

Shonda Rhimes is the creator of not only Grey’s Anatomy, but also How To Get Away With Murder. While I didn’t end up pursuing a medical degree, I am planning on going to law school, so this show, which centers around a fierce lawyer, Annalise Keating, is right up my alley. If you like drama, plot twists and murder-mysteries, this series should be perfect for you, too. After all, who doesn’t want to learn how to get away with murder?

5. The Walking Dead

If you haven’t heard of this TV show before, you only need to know one thing – zombies. The Walking Dead premiered its ninth season this past Sunday. While ratings for the episode were unfortunately low (probably due to two main cast members confirming their departures), The Walking Dead still holds a special place in my heart. If you ask me about my thoughts on whether the show should have ended after season eight, I could probably talk all day. But for now, I’ll just say that if you haven’t watched a single episode of The Walking Dead before, now is your chance (it’s on Netflix, after all).
