Top 10 Movies to See This Summer

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Northwestern chapter.

Summer is fast approaching. While we try and muster up the strength to finish out the year, here are some movies to look forward to seeing this summer.

Jurassic WorldJune 12

If you’re a 90’s kid like me, you remember Jurassic Park. I remember being so scared of the dinosaurs that I started throwing stuff at the TV. But after that initial fear subsided, I absolutely loved it. So after the flops that were the 2nd and 3rd movie, I was really skeptical about this one. But then Chris Pratt was cast, the trailers came out, and now I’m super psyched! This is definitely going to be a great movie.

Inside Out June 19

Disney/Pixar has done it again! Adding to their list of iconic movies, Inside Out is sure to be just as good.  It follows a girl who just moved, and her emotions are fighting for control of her mind, throwing her into chaos. It looks to be full of memorable one-liners and hilarious moments; definitely not just for kids.

Ted 2June 26

If you like “Family Guy” and loved “Ted,” “Ted 2” is for you. It revisits Ted and John as they try and get a lawsuit started to allow Ted to be a parent after he married Tami-Lynn. This looks to be chock-full of stupid moments and tear-filled laughter.

Magic Mike XXLJuly 1

I think it was a given that “Magic Mike” was going to get a sequel. When you add stripping, gyrating and Channing Tatum into one feature length film, it was just bound to happen. Not to mention the ending of the first one kind of sucked. Magic Mike XXL has all of your favorite Kings of Tampa on a road trip to Myrtle Beach for one last great dance. Are you excited? I’m very excited.

Minions – July 10

Universal Studios definitely knows where the money’s at. The “Minions” movie has been a long time coming. These adorable creatures stole our hearts in “Despicable Me” one and two and definitely deserve their own movie. And with Sandra Bullock playing the villain, I will be waiting in the midnight premiere line.

Ant-ManJuly 17

If you’re still going through Marvel withdrawal after the spectacle that was “Avengers: Age of Ultron” then “Ant-Man” may scratch that itch. It may not be hugely anticipated, but “Ant-Man” is a necessary movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Plus who doesn’t want to see the gorgeous Paul Rudd? I mean, he literally hasn’t aged since Clueless. Like what?

TrainwreckJuly 17

Okay, this looks beyond funny. Amy Schumer plays Amy (same name, not based on her life though), career woman who is allergic to commitment. She was taught by her bitter father that monogamy was never possible, so when she meets a nice guy, she thinks something’s wrong with him, and with her. This is one to keep an eye on, especially with Schumer’s newfound stardom.

Paper TownsJuly 24

This is one of the most anticipated book-to-movie adaptations since “The Fault in Our Stars.” Coincidence that they’re both by John Green? I don’t think so. Quentin, played by Nat Wolff (Isaac in TFIOS), is secretly in love with his longtime neighbor Margo, played by Cara Delevingne. After she disappears, Quentin and his friends go searching for her, following the clues she left behind. Can someone say ‘Movie of the Summer’????

Fantastic FourAugust 7

Another superhero movie! This one is a remake of the 2005 Fantastic Four that starred Ioan Gruffudd, Michael Chiklis and Jessica Alba. This time around, there are better special effects and bigger hype. And with a well-known cast; Miles Teller as Reed Richards/Mr. Fantastic, Kate Mara as Susan Storm/Invisible Woman and Michael B. Jordan as Johnny Storm/The Human Torch. While this one won’t be any closer to the comics, it’s still getting the comic-girl inside of me excited to see it at the midnight-premiere.

Sinister 2August 21

“Sinister” was thought to be one of the scariest movies in a while, but its sequel looks even worse. This time it revolves around a different family, but shows how the events from the first movie could happen – through the children’s eyes. Just watching the trailer gave me the heebeegeebees – that Boogey Man is not something I want to see again anytime soon.
