The Basics
To start, we wanted to do a quick overview of the directional things you’ll want to know when taking the CTA. First, if a redline train says it’s going to Howard, that means it’s going North (a.k.a toward Evanston). If it says it’s going to 95th, that means it’s going South (toward downtown Chicago). Also, if you’re facing toward Lake Michigan anywhere in Chicago or Evanston, then you’re facing East.
When in doubt, Howard
It’s too confusing to try to take the purple line to express. Guys, it’s all over the place. If you need to switch, get off at Howard, Wilson or Belmont
Always have your Ventra card on you
If you have an iPhone, you can add your Ventra card to your Apple Wallet. Otherwise, make sure your card is always somewhere on you! Here’s how much the bus and train cost per ride:

Get the CTA/Ventra app
The app is essential. You always want to know how long it’ll be before the bus or train comes, especially in the winter. It also helps you keep track of how much money you have on your Ventra card.
Get that bedazzled pepper spray
This won’t always be necessary — neither of us has ever had to use ours — but it’s good to have it, especially at night. My general rule is to avoid taking the train after 11pm if I’m alone. Also, look up from whatever you’re doing once in a while; it’s always good to be aware of your surroundings.
Don’t be shy, use the heaters
They save lives.
Our favorite lines
Willa: I’m biased because I took the red line throughout high school. I feel like you can get anywhere on the red line, from Howard to 95th, and you’ll end up with some interesting stories, girl.
Anaya: Blue line is so cute and simple. There are not as many stops but it still can bring you into the city, and at the end of the day, it’s the CTA.
Get that good train soundtrack
Romanticizing life is a must on the train, but make sure to keep your head up and look around often if you have both earbuds in :)
Cute cafes you can go to based on your last stop
Belmont
Dark Matter (Osmium) – SO GOOD! Try their Agave Latte; it hits.
Bittersweet – If you’re feeling bougie, go here. They have all these cute little pastries, and their avocado toast is amazing. It’s a great place for a nice brunch.
Division
Healthy Living– Support a small business — we love the owner and they make amazing protein shakes and waffles.
Berwyn/Argyle – Berwyn and Argyle get you to Andersonville which is THE CUTEST
La Colombe – Eats. In the fall they have a Nitro chai latte, which we definitely recommend.
Kopi Cafe – OK, Kopi is so cute. They have a cozy area where you can sit on cushions and look out the window. The Roma sandwich is the best thing on the menu. Plus, they have a cute little shop in the back that has my favorite perfume.
Coffee Studio – They have the best Chai I’ve ever had!
Taste of Lebanon – This is not a cafe, but it’s definitely the best restaurant in the area. They only take cash, but it’s super cheap. The fries and falafel wrap combo makes us want to cry tears of joy every time. In the winter, try their lentil soup.
Morse
The Common Cup – This is our go-to if we get off at Morse. It’s super small and cute, and they have AMAZING quiches and matcha lattes. It’s a good place to lock in on work in my opinion. Also, on the way from the train station you pass by this witch-themed store, and the vibes in there are immaculate.
Logan Square
Furious Spoon– They have amazing ramen and the workers play the best music.
