Sweater weather and fall colors. Pumpkin carving and apple picking. Costume parties and candy. There are just too many things to love about October.
But too many of those Halloween sweets can be a trick rather than a treat on your waistline. Give into your temptation while curbing the calorie count with these simple and tasty swaps!
1. Opt for sugar-free Jelly Belly jellybeans over the regular kind. They taste the same while saving you 28% of the calories.
2. This one is a toss up. Although one Dum Dum is only 25 calories. it may not satisfy your taste buds for long. A single Blow Pop is 60 calories, but it takes longer to eat and enjoy between finishing the lollipop shell and then chewing the gum inside.
3. Skittles and Starburst are staples of a sweet tooth and it’s easier to watch your portions with fun-sized wrappers- just be sure to stick to one bag! Small Skittles and Starburst packages are 60 and 40 calories respectively.
4. Miniature candies seem like a saving grace, but like the Skittles and Starburst, it can be all too easy to graze on them. Combat chocolate hankerings with Tootsie Roll Midgees instead of Twix Minis. Six of these chewy little confections are only 140 calories whereas four crunchy Twix account for 170 calories.
Â
5. We know we can’t resist that Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup. Sure, there’s some protein in the peanut butter, but just two cups in the pack set you back 210 calories. If you’re really craving that much chocolate, choose Hershey’s Special Dark chocolate. At 190 calories for a whole bar (or nine individual kisses), it packs powerful antioxidants that are actually healthy for you.
6. For those fruit-flavor lovers, pick a Fruit Roll-Up over a Laffy Taffy rope. The Roll-Up is lower in fat and only 50 calories, where a full rope of taffy is 80.
7. If you’re goal is to stay looking like a million bucks, follow suit and nibble on a 100 Grand bar instead of a Snickers. Both bars satisfy your chocolaty-caramel craving, but the 100 Grand saves you a whopping 90 calories. Â
8. Candy Corn is a staple of Halloween, but it is basically pure sugar with a serving size of 140 calories. Make the smarter choice: a roll of sweet Smarties, only 25 calories.
