The Quarter System: Pros and Cons

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Northwestern chapter.

Northwestern students share a love-hate relationship with the quarter system. Here’s why.

LOVE:

It is Nerdwestern after all. The quarter system allows us to take more classes. We LOVE when we get into the fascinating classes we wanted. If we don’t, we LOVE that there are more opportunities to try.

HATE:

On the first day of class, there is a likely chance that the professor will casually announce the upcoming midterm…in two weeks. We HATE not having syllabus week.

LOVE:

Vacation is free of studying for upcoming exams or catching up on classes you’re behind in. We LOVE that our breaks are true breaks.

HATE:

When our semester school friends are free on summer break, we can’t quite enjoy ourselves in the same way. We HATE that our friends start summer vacation while we’re still enduring finals and end-of-quarter projects.

LOVE:

The quarter system allows us to experiment with different classes across all curriculums and find exactly what we want to study. We LOVE that “undecided” does not have to be a stressful word.

HATE:

With the fast academic pace, there always is work to be doing. We HATE that many days it’s hard to find time for even a nap.

LOVE:

The quarter system makes it SUPER easy to finish school a quarter or two early. We LOVE that we can dip out a little bit early. #GoCats
