The Pattern Plague: Fall Fashion 2018

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Northwestern chapter.

It’s fall, which means it’s time to bundle up and throw on a cute sweater and some boots. We know fall means sweater weather, but clothing companies have a new favorite trend that goes beyond knitwear, and that is funky patterns. Anything from newspaper print to hibiscus shirts is in this fall.

As I was doing my weekly browse of Reformation’s new arrivals, I was shocked by how many printed dresses and shirts they were selling. I couldn’t decide if I loved these designs or if they were too much, but as I looked into other clothing companies, I realized these trendy patterns were taking the fashion industry by storm.

These were a few of my favorites from Reformation’s site, and I decided to order the Cara Dress in Comic just to give this fad a whirl.

Companies from Forever 21 to Gucci are selling pants, blouses, blazers and dresses with fun eye-catching patterns. Many designers are over simplicity and have figured, why not layer prints? Tom Ford’s fall collection depicts this exact mentality by splicing together several looks to create something spunky yet cohesive.

This Forever 21 dress is perfect for the fall – consider layering with a plaid mid-length coat to mix and matching those styles! Take other inspiration from Maje and Gucci too, who are incorporating playful patterns into their accessories as well.
