Meet the PHA Vice President of Membership, Sarah Horstman!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Northwestern chapter.

Name: Sarah Horstman

Year: Senior, 2017

Hometown: Roswell, GA

Majors/Minors: Civil Engineering

Position on PHA Executive Board: Vice President of Membership

Can you tell us a little bit about your PHA officer position?

As the PHA VP Membership, I’m coordinating chapter Membership Chairs and Recruitment Counselors in order to help everyone, both Potential New Members and active members, have the best Recruitment experience possible. It involves a lot of note taking, coordination, and my Google Calendar has become my best friend.

What is your favorite thing about being a PHA officer?

My favorite thing about being a PHA officer would definitely be the people–the PHA exec board is made up of very talented, driven, and inspiring women who I am so glad that I have gotten to know over my year in this position. Additionally, the many people who represent their chapters, both as Recruitment Counselors and Membership Chairs, are always giving me amazing ideas and making the hard parts of the job that much better through their attitudes.

Why did you decide to go through the recruitment process?

I had always felt that I would go through Sorority Recruitment because of the members of my family who went Greek, and I was excited to give it a chance. Of course, the process itself isn’t super fun or easy, but I think it was well worth it in the end.

What advice do you have for individuals who are about to go through the recruitment process?

I sound like a broken record, but the advice I always give is to keep an open mind! There are so many amazing women in our 12 PHA chapters that a PNM can get to know! Also, make sure you wear warm clothes. Please wear warm clothes.

Describe yourself in three words.

Stubborn, passionate, and organized.

Are you a part of any other organizations on campus?

I was briefly involved with SWE and ASCE (the American Society of Civil Engineers).

Anything else you would like to share with Her Campus Northwestern?

If you aren’t sure about the Recruitment Process–that’s totally fine! Many people aren’t, but it’s better to try it and be sure of your decision than always wonder if you should have tried. So give it a shot and I guarantee you’ll meet some amazing women.
