Seth Meyers took a break from Weekend Update this week to visit his alma mater. Lucky for us, Meyers graduated from Northwestern in 1996 and returned to serve as the Grand Marshall for the 2011 Homecoming parade Friday.
“I haven’t seen him since he came to do standup at NU two years ago,” said Weinberg junior Emily Gerst. “Now I’m really excited.”
Though Meyers was certainly a main attraction, the parade also showcased floats made by sororities, fraternities, student organizations and clubs, and the football team. Willie the Wildcat and Coach Pat Fitzgerald were there too.
NU students, alumni, and Evanston community members lined the street from Lincoln to Chicago on Sheridan Rd. to take in the “Purple Reign.”
After the parade was over, the action moved to a pep rally at Deering Field. President Shapiro spoke, along with former Grand Marshall, Gary Marshall, who introduced Meyers.
“When I was a student there was no Facebook, so if you wanted to look up a girl, you had to go to a library,” Meyers joked in his speech.
2011 Homecoming co-chair Elisse Kavensky said she hopes students and alumni will really enjoy all the work her committee has put into this event.
“Homecoming is a tradition!” Kavensky said. “We celebrate by bringing the NU community-young and old together.”
