The night of the Emmy Awards is one of the most exciting nights for fashion lovers- the red carpet floods with glitz and glamour, with celebrities wearing everything from vintage gowns from the archives to dresses straight from the runway. This year’s Emmys’ was no exception. Let’s take a look at the night’s best and worst red carpet looks.

Best Dressed

1.  Nina Dobrev

The Vampire Diaries beauty graces the top of our best-dressed list in a stunning curve-hugging red Donna Karan mermaid gown. Nina’s side-swept waves showed off her toned shoulders and arms, while she added just the right amount of sparkle with a Neil Lane collar necklace and matching metallic Judith Lieber clutch. There were noticeably many red gowns on last night’s red carpet, but this one was definitely a stand out.

2.  Jayma Mays

The quirky Glee starlet was a vision in a pastel pink, tiered Zuhair Murad gown. Although she was decked out in pink head to toe, Jayma’s look wasn’t overwhelming, but rather youthful and glowing with dainty Neil Lane diamonds that added hints of sparkle, including a diamond brooch used as a hair pin. Overall, the ultra-feminine look was the night’s breath of fresh air, among the array of sexy gowns with plunging necklines and body-conscious silhouettes.

3.  Katie Holmes

Katie Holmes channeled simple and classic in a custom-made silk royal blue Calvin Klein Collection number and her hair effortlessly pulled up in a chic bun. The minimalistic look was completed with her waist cinched in with a simple, skinny, silver belt. Katie needed no additional jewelry other than her wedding ring to make this look a classic stand-out.

4.  Sofia Vergara

Sofia Vergara played up her famous curves in a scarlet Vera Wang gown, and added some bright color contrast with her emerald and gold earrings, which, the actress commented, was her favorite part of her outfit. The simple gold cuff also worked to complement the earrings, but the best part of this look is the way the draping of the dress hugged every inch of Sofia’s flawless figure.

5.  Jennifer Carpenter

The Dexter actress glowed in a beaded champaign Tony Ward Couture gown with a dramatic leg slit that added even more drama to the look. The dress was very glamorous on its own, so the actress kept everything else simple- from her effortless, tousled wavy hair to her simple bracelet and matching Judith Leiber clutch.

Worst Dressed

1.  Julianne Hough

The beautiful and talented dancer, singer and actress didn’t hit the right note on the night’s red carpet. The pink and coral Carolina Herrara gown’s fabric looked too stiff against Julianne’s body, while the black corset belt looked extremely awkward against the rest of her gown. The gown without the belt and Julianne’s hair put down in a sleek blowout would have been a better way to work with the dress. Her makeup was a miss as well, with her over-applied blush looking more like a sunburn than a healthy flush.

2.  Heather Morris

The Glee star couldn’t have chosen a worse dress for her body. The murky violet V-neck gown had too many ruffles it looked like a messy overload of fabric, while the fit of the gown completely hid the actress’ impeccable figure. The hair added to her misguided outfit. With this gown, Heather would have looked much better with sleek, straight hair, instead of an oversized bouffant.

3.  Jenna Ushkowitz

Jenna Ushkowitz wore a black and white Ghadah Paris gown that did absolutely nothing to flatter her figure. This gown looked as if Jenna attached a large paper folded in half onto a simple black cloth wrapped around her body. I assume the coral clutch was meant to add a pop of color to her otherwise monochromatic outfit, but a bright red one would have been a better choice.

 4.  Kyle Richards

Mermaid gowns often land on the best dressed list because when worn right, they can work wonders for most body figures. This look, however, is an example of a mermaid gone too far. The royal blue color of the gown is very rich and elegant, but the folds and texture of the dress made Kyle look like she was wrapped in layers and layers of foil. The dress was also noticeably corseted, making the actress look like she was having a difficult time breathing. An easy flowing gown with an empire waist detail to flatter Kyle’s figure better would have been a better option.
