Your Next Binge-Worthy Obsession On Netflix: One Day

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Northeastern chapter.

I binged this 14-episode drama in about two days and have the biggest show hangover from it right now. I was initially hesitant, the story is a slow burn, and for many, the beginning could appear slow. But, after finishing the show, I realized what a beautiful representation it was of long-lasting, real and raw love—a refreshing departure from the usual fare on TV these days. “One Day” is actually a new adaptation of a popular book by David Nicholls and a movie starring Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess. I had never read the book or watched the movie before this show, but now, I will be more inclined.

The show is excruciatingly beautiful. It takes viewers through the story of two friends, Emma, played by Ambika Mod, and Dexter, played by Leo Woodall. Their story starts in 1988 in the United Kingdom, and the show travels through 20 years of their lives together. Both characters move through their lives; Emma is an aspiring writer, and Dex, whose personal tragedies and self-destructive habits lead him to move backwards, finds himself left behind and filled with longing.

Dex and Emma’s story begins with them bumping into each other at a party which led to them having a failed one-night stand after their graduation party. Yet, what truly sparks their connection is the hours spent talking that night. When I mentioned the show was excruciating, here’s why: the evolution of their romantic interests and dynamics over the years is both captivating and agonizing.

Witnessing their relationship unfold over time is a rollercoaster of emotions. One can’t help but wonder: why won’t they just confess their feelings to each other? The constant back and forth between these characters had me glued to the screen, practically shouting, “Just tell them how you feel!” The lacking communication skills between them, however frustrating, add to the show’s raw and genuine appeal.

Beyond the storyline itself, the performances of the actors portraying Dex and Emma are truly exceptional. They embody these characters with such authenticity, offering viewers a raw and compelling portrayal. Despite my earlier frustrations, the show offers glimpses of hope through fleeting moments and interactions between the pair, which keeps the audience invested.

What sets this series apart is its ability to capture the essence of long-lasting connections amidst life’s tumult. However, it’s not without its differences from the source material and previous adaptation. While the show remains faithful to the core narrative, it brings its own nuances and interpretations to the table, making it a compelling watch for both newcomers and fans of the original story. This series displays the ability to evoke a sense of loss in the viewer. As the story unfolds, Dex and Emma lose precious time together amidst their back-and-forth struggles. While the narrative is filled with twists and turns, I assure you; it’s a journey well worth taking. If you’re seeking a show that seamlessly blends heartbreak and hope, look no further than “One Day.”

I won’t spoil the show for those who want to watch, but let me tell you, their story lingers in my mind even now. I find myself yearning for more, reluctant to let their journey come to an end. Reflecting on their narrative has taught me the importance of expressing one’s feelings before it’s too late.
