Why You Shouldn’t Hate Valentine’s Day

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Northeastern chapter.

Valentine’s Day is just around the corner, and while some have–quite literally–bought into this holiday, many people still aren’t convinced. To all you cynics out there, I understand, the holiday is completely commercialized and is just an excuse for couples to rub their happiness in other people’s faces. While stereotypes suggest that only single people hate this holiday because they are ‘bitter,’ that is definitely not true. Many people in relationships also think the holiday is overrated and that you shouldn’t need a specific day to do something special for your significant other. Single or taken, there are plenty of reasons to hate Valentine’s Day. However, this year, instead of acting like the V-Day Grinch, you should embrace the day! Why? Because being positive is way more fun than wasting your energy on hate. But if you still can’t find a good reason to like the holiday, HCNU has given you 5.

1. Treat Yourself!Okay so maybe you are single on Valentine’s Day. You could use this time to sulk or you could take advantage of this day and celebrate yourself. This goes for collegiates in a relationship as well. Spend Valentine’s Day pampering yourself, either by putting on your favorite outfit, giving yourself a spa treatment or just spending some alone time exploring the city. Valentines day is the day of love, so why not give yourself some?

2. TV SpecialsAlso jumping on this hallmark bandwagon, much to our advantage, are our favorite TV shows! Not wanting to do anything for Valentine’s Day? There’s nothing wrong with bingeing on some classic Valentine’s Day specials. Some personal favorites include the 30 Rock where Liz celebrates by getting a root canal, the Friends episode where the girls set a bonfire to rid them of all their bad luck in love, and the Boy Meets World where Cory tries to throw his mom a baby shower. If TV isn’t enough, there are also plenty of movies you can watch in lieu of the holiday.

3. Candy and DessertsWhile we’re on the topic of treating yourself, like most holidays, Valentine’s Day is an excuse to indulge in some of the most decadent foods, desserts and candies. Don’t forget that the next day, all that candy goes on sale, so you can stock up.

4. Stuff To DoValentine’s Day is packed with plenty of events. From bar crawls to concerts to fancy dinners, there’s no shortage of activities, single or not. And if you can’t find a fun event in the city, Valentine’s Day is the perfect excuse to plan something fun for you and your friends. Plan a party, host a fancy dinner, or maybe even go on a blind date. No matter what your relationship status is, take advantage of the holiday as an excuse to get out, be with your loved ones, and do something out of the ordinary.

5. Tell Someone You Love ThemNot that you need a specific day to do this, but Valentine’s Day can serve as a reminder that you should tell someone that you love them. Often we get swept up in day-to-day pressures and we forget to remind our friends and family how much we appreciate them. So while love is on your mind, take this opportunity and let them know it. If you do happen to be single on Valentine’s Day, instead of feeling sad, remember that you do have love in your life. Maybe its not the kind that this commercialized holiday is advertising, but it is just as important.
