Why Everyone Should Watch “This Is Us”

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Northeastern chapter.

Television shows have always been considered as a way to escape. Whether it be keeping up with the drama of Shonda-land or having some laughs with Modern Family, they always serve their purpose of some nice entertainment after a long day. New shows always come out during the Fall, and with so many new and existing shows already out there, it can be hard to stand out from the crowd. In this case to the crowd is being the viewers. It really is make it or break it. Being a TV enthusiast myself, I am always looking for new shows to get hooked on, but it can be a dangerous business getting invested in a show that may end up being cancelled after the first season. Regardless of that fear, it is good to branch out and try new and interesting shows. This year certainly did not disappoint, and in my opinion there was one show that has struck gold: This Is Us. The truly best way to describe this show would be real, emotional, and real emotional. In my opinion, there is no other show on television right now that can tug at your heartstrings and create such a deep connection that you will be yearning for the next episode the following week.

The show features some familiar faces, as well as some fresh new ones, making the cast diverse, unique, and overall fantastic. Mandy Moore, America’s darling from the iconic Nicholas Sparks movie A Walk to Remember, and Milo Ventimiglia, our favorite misunderstood bad boy from Gilmore Girls, will become your new favorite tv couple and parents. They are now characterized as Rebecca and Jack as they deal with the obstacles of marriage and parenthood. Another actor you may recognize is Sterling K. Brown. He is the Emmy Award winning actor from The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story. Some newcomers include Chrissy Metz, Justin Hartley, Susan Watson, and Chris Sullivan, along with plenty of adorable children throughout. Without giving too much away, there are two storylines occurring simultaneously that encompass love, fights, laughter, heartbreak, and plenty of plot twists that connect everything together and keep you on your toes.

With award nominations recently released, This Is Us received 10 total nominations, including Golden Globe nominations for Best Television Series Drama and Best Supporting Actress in a Series for Mandy Moore and Chrissy Metz, as well as a SAG Award nomination for Sterling K. Brown for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Drama Series, People’s Choice Award nomination for Favorite New TV Drama, and Critics’ Choice Award nomination for Best Drama Series. These are some of the hardest categories to be nominated in. Shows such as Game of Thrones and Stranger Things appear to have the upperhand with their extraordinary characters and production. This Is Us, however, dominates in the sense of portraying real life in an extraordinary way. In its  simplest form, it is a story about life and all that entails, which makes the title and the show itself so fitting, relatable, and refreshing. This Is Us returns to NBC on January 10, which gives you plenty of time to catch up. Make sure to have your tissues ready!
