True Life: I Don’t Ship Rick and Michonne

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Northeastern chapter.

Rick and Michonne are The Walking Dead’s star couple right now. They finally got together in a  move that absolutely shocked some fans and delighted others. Many of the fans who were in favor of this relationship stated that there were many clues in the series that pointed to a romantic connection between Michonne and Rick. Some even went as far as to make montages of all the different moments in which they saw sexual tension between the two of them. I  am not convinced.

The revealing of the relationship felt like a cheap shock to me. I’m an avid fan of The Walking Dead, and I watch each episode very closely. I NEVER saw any connection between Rick and Michonne besides the strong will they shared. This season and last season of The Walking Dead have had less than stellar reviews, and this feels to me like just another easy twist to execute in order to surprise fans. Michonne is not an emotional woman, and she considers everything very rationally. To jump into a relationship that could drastically alter the dynamics within the group seems wholly unlike her, and leaving out any deliberation from her on whether or not the relationship should continue seems careless.

I also feel that the ease with which Carl accepted their relationship was unrealistic as well. I know, the show itself is unrealistic, but the personal relationships themselves are always human and real. Carl witnessed his mother die, and his loyalty to her never wavered despite her trust with Shane. For him to accept that his dad has moved on, without any of that teen angst that Carl is so famous for, is just not in character for him. Even beyond Carl, no one seems to have a problem with this relationship.

I, for one, feel the development of this relationship could have been handled way better, and I hope the writers of The Walking Dead can regain the magic they had in earlier seasons.
