Transition from School to Summer in a Breeze

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Northeastern chapter.

Co-oping this spring? Enrolling in summer classes? Or maybe you’re jetting off to the Caribbean for a much-needed vacay. Whatever your plans are, these fashion rules apply to you. HC has five key pieces to take you from spring to Summer effortlessly. Relax as we show you how to turn each of these wardrobe staples into office appropriate, classroom chic, and poolside perfect.

White Button Down

Work it: Use this classic piece to your advantage. The key is to look for a tailored fit that’s not too tight or clingy. Tuck the blouse into a pencil skirt to create a sleek silhouette. Add a bright pair of flats to jazz up an office outfit.

School it: For the perfect blend of casual and polish, wear this with a pair of denim skinnies. Loosely button it over a lace camisole for a sophisticated effect.

Play it: For a refreshing twist on a bathing suit cover-up, throw this on with a pair of denim cut-offs and bright flip-flops. Your outfit is sure to turn heads at the pool!

High Waisted Skirt

Work it: To create a cool contrast, tuck a loose, flowy blouse into your skirt. A high waisted skirt will nip in your middle and make you look pulled-together while rushing around the office.

School it: On hot summer days, wear a lace cami or tank with your skirt. A thin cardigan will make it class appropriate without making you sweat!

Play it: Since it’s convenient to throw on before heading to the beach, this piece can also double as a swimsuit cover-up. Add a tank top for an easy outfit, pre or post swim session.

Striped Tee

Work it: Tuck your shirt into a pencil skirt to dress it up for the office. Add a solid colored cardigan if you want an extra layer. Shades of red or yellow will pop against navy or black stripes.

School it: Wear a blazer to add structure to your tee’s slouchy shape. Tailored styles work well, drawing the eye in, and accentuating your waist. Add some denim and you’re good to go. When in doubt, boot cut jeans always provide a flattering fit.

Play it: A skirt will play up your tee’s nautical vibe. Try a high-waisted fit, or go with a denim mini for a cute combo. Wear with beaded sandals to complete the look.

Skinny Black Pants

Work it: Evoke envy from all your co-workers with a sophisticated ensemble. A silk blouse + a pretty cardigan + patent flats = success!

School it: A flouncy baby doll top provides contrast to the skinny shape of your pants. Look for a unique pattern with elegant extras like tiny cutouts or lace detailing. Black bottoms won’t compete with bold tops, allowing your shirt to soak up all the attention.

Play it: Pair them with a vintage tee for a fun, weekend outing. Shoes like converse low tops or tom’s slip-ons are the perfect finishing touch. These casual pieces will give your entire outfit a relaxing vibe.

Pashmina Scarf

Work it: A pretty scarf is the perfect accessory for the office. It makes your whole ensemble look polished while adding a personal touch. Plus, you can wear it several different ways. This article has some great ideas on how to tie your scarf.

School it: Wear your scarf as a belt to jazz up a pair of favorite jeans. Scrunch it up and thread through belt loops to make any school day outfit more exciting. If your scarf has a pattern or any embellishments, keep things simple on top.

Play it: A pashmina brings so many possibilities to the table! For the beach or pool, wear it as a bikini cover-up by tying it over your hips. You can also wear it as a shawl over a sweet summer dress. Another idea is to use it as a carryall. Check out this article on how to turn your scarf into a beach tote.
