Things You’ve Learned During Your First Month of Freshman Year (As Told by OITNB)

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Northeastern chapter.

You didn’t need to pay full price for your textbooks. In fact, you probably didn’t need most of your textbooks at all. You definitely didn’t need to buy them four months in advance.

The dining hall is not the best option for good food. You’ll now try to find any other place that you can use your meal swipes or Husky Dollars.

You don’t need to ask to go to leave the room during class.

You did not need that enormous pile of clothes you brought to school. Then again, it makes it a lot easier to let that laundry pile up.

Speaking of, you shouldn’t do your laundry on a Sunday night. Unless you want to wait three hours for a dryer.

You don’t have to be best friends with your roommate. You’re (hopefully) on good terms, but you don’t have to hang out with them every minute of the day.

Your professors are actually really forgiving. They want to help you succeed and will be pretty helpful if you go talk to them.

You don’t want to be a part of every club you went to the first meeting for.

But if you want free food, you just show up to a random club meeting.

You miss your parents a little bit, but you miss your pets more.

You actually know how to get around campus now. You’re starting to feel like a pro when you walk past tour groups.

You realized you are not going to stick to that workout plan at all. But you went to the gym once so that counts right?

Your classes are tougher than the first week made them seem.

You aren’t as confident about your major decision as you thought you were. And you definitely don’t know what you want to do after college.

You’re probably not the smartest kid in school anymore. It’s okay, and you are starting to adjust to it.

On the other hand, you’ve realized some people are just pretending to know what they are talking about.

You’ve started to learn to think more critically, and are more willing to take strong stances on things you care about.

You’ve learned it’s okay to be a little bit lonely, but you’re starting to feel closer to your new friends.
