Our Goodbye to Gossip Girl, XOXO

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Northeastern chapter.

Rise and shine, collegiettes, it’s time to start reflecting and reminiscing about our favorite Upper East Siders as the series finale of Gossip Girl is barely a month away. For the past six years, we’ve indulged in every scandal, secret and sex play these characters gave us. We’ve grown with them, become attached to them, and talked about them like they’re our own friends. We’ve bitched about their missteps and praised their good decisions like we somehow know them personally—no one has done this more than myself.

That being said, it almost goes without saying that with the end of this series comes the end of an era. Back at the very beginning, the show’s existence itself caused as many scandals and uproar as a Georgina Sparks cameo. The show was both loved and hated—critics either praised the sex appeal or criticized the demise of our generation’s youth. Parents completely lost their cool (having seemingly forgotten about their own Melrose Place days). But the show’s ratings were something that couldn’t be argued with, and we were graced with six years of GG addiction.

As we mourn the loss of some of our best fictional friends, let’s skip to step four of the seven stages of grief—in our depression, we reflect.

Though we may not have the mile-long legs, perfectly tousled golden tresses, or effortlessly perfected wardrobe of Serena van der Woodsen, let’s look at everything our favorite “it-girl” has taught us. If there’s one thing we can learn from Serena, it’s that it is never too late to change. Mistakes will be made, big and small––and you can’t change the past—but you can always learn from them and move forward. Since that day six years ago when she was spotted returning at Grand Central Station, Serena has worked to shed her old party girl skin and become the good person that, deep down, she always was. Bumps in the road will always pop up, but it’s never too late to be the best version of yourself. After all, if Serena can go from a borderline drug addict to working for big time movie producers and up-and-coming newspapers, there’s no reason you can’t do whatever you’ve always dreamed of!

On the other end of the spectrum, we must also remember that planning every detail of your life, from your outfits to college to your future mentor, doesn’t always pan out—and sometimes, it’s okay to fumble. To the Blair Waldorfs of the world, don’t fret too much over every little detail—if Blair has taught us anything, it’s always to stay driven, strong, and independent, even when things don’t go according to plan. Her stubbornness, tough exterior and constant need for control may push her (and everyone else) over the edge at times, but her evil side doesn’t completely destroy her image (everyone has their bitch side, so embrace it)! Be your own person, strive for people to see you greatly, and open your heart to love once in awhile.

To the gentlemen reading this, remember what our favorite Upper East Side fellas have taught you. To you Chuck Bass wannabes, remember that your parents’ opinions are not the end all be all. Bart Bass will never be a loving dad to poor C, but Chuck has done nothing but try to impress him and be the man he thinks Bart wants him to be. Be proud of yourself instead! You don’t need anyone’s approval but your own—that being said, remember to keep yourself in check. Risks are worth taking, but there are lines not to be crossed, and keeping your head on straight (and putting your heart first) is most important in the end.

To those deep feeling, outsider artist boys, who may or may not have the friendliest fathers and a killer book deal-the Dan Humphreys of the world-keep in mind that the grass is not always greener on the other side. Being on the inside isn’t always what you’ve chalked it up to be in your head—and what you think you’re lacking may be exactly what you’ve gained. Money isn’t everything, but family is. Also keep in mind, Humphrey-a-likes, that nobody is perfect—and judging too harshly is never an admirable quality. Glass houses, my friends. But keep your heart set on your art and your dreams, keep your friends and family close, and steer clear of the drama best you can.

And lastly for my favorites, the true and loyal friends, the Nate Archibalds of the world, keep on being yourselves. The chance of anyone having the dashing good looks, cool demeanor and perfect eyes and jaw line of Nate are slim to none—but having a heart like his is a close second, believe me. Nate Archibald always stayed loyal to his friends and family, no matter what they did—and even in his anger, he was always the first to dole out forgiveness. He was and forever will be the golden boy of the Upper East Side. Remember, Nates, the good guy will always win in the end, and though your parents and family may not be perfect, that doesn’t predispose you to be the same. Outshine them, and show the world your true colors. Though it may sometimes feel like you’re overshadowed because of your quiet demeanor and manners, don’t let it steer you astray…we love you more, in the end.

Like any good friends, our Manhattan royalty friends have taught us many life lessons. Let’s adorn the black threads and mourn them for awhile, but let us never forget our six year journey, collegiettes.

You know you love me (well, us.)

XOXO, Her Campus
