The highly anticipated 56th Grammy Awards kicked off at 8 PM EST on Sunday, January 26th and it was definitely a mixed bag. So here’s the breakdown of what was hot and what was not:

Hot:

Daft Punk, Stevie Wonder Pharrell Williams, and Nile Rogers.

This collaboration was not what I expected, which was definitely a good thing. And having Stevie Wonder be a part of it was awesome!

Kendrick Lamar and Imagine Dragons.

This was by far one of the best performances that night! This mash up featuring “Radioactive” and “M.A.A.D City” was a pleasant surprise and Dan Reynolds sure does have a way with the beat!

Pink.

Yes, Pink was in the air. No surprises there. But, overall, her performance was good, the choreography was interesting, and she used the stage unlike most of the other performers.

Macklemore, Ryan Lewis, Queen Latifah, and Madonna.

This performance, in and of itself, was a mixed bag. The song is great and the marriage ceremony idea was brilliant (I mean, how many people can say that Queen Latifah presided over there wedding at the Grammy’s? Exactly 35 couples can say that). But I don’t quite understand why Madonna was out there. I mean, she was good. But I just don’t get it.

Not:

The Music.

The only musical performance I really enjoyed was the Kendrick Lamar/ Imagine Dragon mash up. I found myself “sitting through” all of the acts, waiting for one that I thought would be good, and then being disappointed. Unfortunately, that seemed to be the real theme of this year’s Grammy’s.

The Performances.

In general, the performances we so underwhelming. No one used the stage as much as they could have. There weren’t really any elaborate performances. Nobody took any risks (Well, besides Pink. But she was in the air again. Same old trick) and the performances just seemed to drag on. And the hair flipping, Taylor? Really?

The Award Winners.

Jay-Z only won 2? Beyonce didn’t win any? What about Pink? It was a travesty, I tell you!

Overall, the Grammys were pretty bad this year. If you didn’t watch it, congrats! You didn’t waste a perfectly good Sunday night. But, hey, maybe next year’s will be better.

My name is Hope and I'm a Communication Studies major. I chose to be a Communication Studies major because I love learning about different media and how each type affects the audience in a different way. Also, this major puts me on the path toward a publishing job, which is important to me. I was born in Oakland, California and raised in Richmond, California, but I've lived in South Jersey for the past five years. Some of my interests include playing tennis, watching tennis, and spending time with my friends and family.
