We’ve all heard our fair share of sunscreen rules. And yes—although it may seem overwhelming— I have learned these rules are law for many reasons.

With summer around the corner, our vitamin D intake will be through the roof, but so should our use of sunscreen. Before you even think of tanning, invest in a good sunscreen! You will thank me later. 

The reapplication of sunscreen calls forth a youthful-looking future. Now, picture this: you’re wincing with pain every time you bathe in the sun, feeling hot to the touch. How’s that sound instead? 

As commercial-like as I may sound, Sunscreen isn’t an option. It is genuinely a need. Now I know what you’re thinking, “Yes sunscreen is good. Get to the tips already!” I’m almost there, I swear. 

First, let’s get serious. Sunscreen is a photoprotective topical product designed for sun ray absorption and reflection. In short, it provides an absorptive layer of defense against UV rays. The very benefits of sunscreen are appealing alone. With sunscreen, we’re shielded from these damaging rays that prevent premature aging, sunburns, and skin cancer. Let me repeat that one: skin cancer! Now, don’t expect a wrinkle-free face 24 hours after application; good things take time. With sunscreen, patience is key. 

Aside from the spectacular and enticing benefits, sunscreen has its own directions. Here’s a breakdown of my favorite tips for ultra-damage protection:

“Sunscreen each day keeps the UV damage at bay.” 

First and foremost, sunscreen must be worn everyday. Even if only clouds are apparent in the sky, don’t underestimate the sun. Note that one-and-done is not the case. Sunscreen calls for reapplication approximately every two hours.

This tip is a bit tricky to attain. For instance, what if I have a full face on? Thankfully, sunscreen comes in all forms: spray, powder, pills and cream. I assure you reapplication is not a hassle. In fact, some makeup products include sunscreen, but that does not mean you can substitute makeup as your primary protection. 

“Two will make do.”

Distribute the sunscreen along your pointer and middle finger; then apply it on your face and neck for ample protection. The two-finger rule supplies a sufficient amount of sunscreen, but wearing extra is perfectly fine. In this case, there’s never too much sunscreen.

“Sunscreen galore with 30 or more.”

There are countless sunscreens on the market, each with various numbers displayed in bold. Which numbers are most efficient? Sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher is the best suggestion. The larger the number, the longer the product ensures protection against UV radiation. For comparison, SPF 30 blocks 97% of UV rays whereas SPF 15 blocks only 93%. Take into consideration that in order for these percentages to be accurate, sunscreen must be worn properly. 

Don’t you dare forget about your lips! Drugstores sell copious lip balms jam packed with nourishing vitamin e-oil and, most importantly, SPF! Lastly, sunscreen should be worn on our scalps! As odd as that may sound, our scalps matter! 

In my opinion, there are no excuses for ditching the UV protector, so go slap some on.
