5 Scary Movies on Netflix That Are Actually Good

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Northeastern chapter.

I am a true lover of all kinds of scary movies –  thrillers, psychological horrors, monster-horror, you name it. If you’re like me, you love the adrenaline rush and the fear that comes with scary movies. However, it can be difficult to find a scary movie that is actually scary and one that isn’t dumb or one that doesn’t rely on cheap jumpscares. So, I’d thought I’d share five scary movies on Netflix that are actually scary!

  1. Forgotten (2017)

When his abducted brother returns with no memory of what occurred to him, a man named Jin-seok gets to the bottom of the truth regarding the kidnapping. This film had me on the edge of my seat the entire time! With numerous twists and turns, this is definitely a film that will keep you invested the entire time!

  1. Call (2020)

Two women who live 20 years apart are able to communicate to each other through a phone call that changes their lives forever. This film was insane, but in a great way. The story is original, the direction is phenomenal, and the acting is amazing. It is a complex movie so you do have to pay a lot of attention, but it’s a great suspense thriller overall!

  1. The Ritual (2017)

Four college friends reunite after the tragic death of their friend. They decide to go hiking in the Scandinavian wilderness, but they encounter an evil presence that seems to stalk them at every turn. The writing in this film was fantastic. It handled the topic of death and trauma so incredibly well. With the writing and the direction, this film felt so authentic. The horror component is dark, eerie and mysterious, but it’s a must-watch!

  1. His House (2020)

This film follows a refugee couple fleeing war-torn South Sudan, however they struggle to adjust to their new life in England as they come across an evil lurking beneath the surface. The originality of the plot was what first drew me to this film, and its impressive acting, direction and scares are what kept me watching! This is an unpredictable and memorable film that was very entertaining!

  1. Veronica (2017)

Set in 1990s Madrid, Spain, this film follows a teenage girl who decides to summon the spirit of her deceased father. However, she soon comes to realize that she may have unleashed a demonic evil. This film is actually based on the mysterious death of Madrid teenager Estefanía Gutiérrez Lázaro, who died mysteriously after using a ouija board. As soon as I heard that information, it instantly made the film scarier. This movie is not for the faint of heart; it’s intense, it’s heartbreaking and it’s honestly terrifying.
