3 DIY Beauty Tips from Pinterest (that actually work!)

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Northeastern chapter.

Pinterest is a magical place. It gives us inspiration on everything from fashion to beauty. It can sometimes be difficult to decipher which beauty tips are actually effective and which ones are just out there. Check out these beauty DIYs that actually work!

1. Aspirin Face Mask

Aspirin is sort of a miracle agent when it comes to feeling your best. It treats hangovers, freshens highlights and, best of all, is a fast zap for pimples. What makes aspirin so special is that it contains salicylic acid, the active ingredient in most acne treatments. Follow the instructions for an easy remedy to quickly banish that unsightly blemish:

  1. Put a few drops of water onto two or three tablets of uncoated aspirin (99 cents at CVS. Be careful not to add too much water or you will have a chalky, runny mess on your hands!)
  2. Massage the aspirin together until they form a paste. Adding a bit of honey helps to bind the solution. Apply to skin.
  3. Leave the solution to work its magic for about 10 minutes!
  4. After you rinse the solution, you will be left with noticeably clearer and refreshed skin!

Disclaimer: When applying this solution, obviously do not put it near your eyes, mouth, or nose. Seriously, do not get this stuff near your nose unless you enjoy sneezing aspirin dust! I discovered this the hard way.

2. Sugar Lip Scrub

The dry autumn and winter air can wreak havoc on our skin, including our lips. Also, with a burgundy lip being one of this season’s hottest trends, no collegiette wants to be seen with dry, dull lips. Sure, you could splurge on a fancy lip scrub from Sephora, but this do-it-yourself method is just as effective and uses ingredients that can be found in the dining hall!

What you’ll need:

  • Toothbrush/ Q-tip
  • 1 Sugar Packet (Brown or plain sugar)
  • 1 Tsp./Packet of Honey

Steps:

  1. Prepare by dabbing lips with a wet cloth.
  2. In a bowl, mix together sugar and honey. Classic brown sugar or white sugar is recommended as it delivers the best consistency. However, raw sugar or Splenda will do just fine!
  3. Apply scrub to lips using a Q-tip. Use a toothbrush if you want added exfoliation.
  4. Rinse off, apply your favorite lip balm, and enjoy your softest lips yet!

Makeup Brush Cleaner

The best way to keep skin blemish-free and to extend the life of your makeup brushes it to wash them at least once a week.  The best DIY cleaner for synthetic brushes uses ingredients you probably have lying around your apartment.

What you’ll need:

  • ½  cup warm water
  • ½ cup vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon of a gentle dish detergent

Steps:

  1. Mix ingredients together into a tall mug or glass. Add brushes.
  2. Swirl brushes in solution to get rid of any excess makeup. Let sit for 20 minutes.
  3. Rinse brushes with cold water and let air dry.
  4. Voila! Your brushes will be as soft and clean as when you first bought them!
