Coming into university we feel like we have to meet a certain amount of expectations. We feel like our parents expect us to do great in school which can be overwhelming especially when you are taking 5-6 classes per semester, we are expected to keep up with every class by our teachers, we are expected to also have extracurricular activities WHILE in school and we are also expected to have a social life! THAT’S CRAZY!!!How can we do all these things and still keeps sane, right? But while people expect these things from us, there is only one that should not be number one priority when being a college student and that is to have a social life. Now, I’m not saying that you shouldn’t have a social life at all but if there is anything we’ve learned from Gossip Girl is that trying to maintain a social life can also be pretty hectic.

When we leave high school, we want to still keep in touch without old friends and when college starts we also want to get to know new people, but how? It is so much pressure to make new friends in college because we feel that lack of presence. If you make new friends, that’s wonderful! However, your main reason for being in college is to discover yourself and try to figure out what you want to do in life. You have plenty of time to grow as a person and no social time should get in the way of that. Although going out with new or old friends can be fun, we still have to put our success first and in college you have every right to be selfish and only care for yourselves. What I am trying to say is that there is time for everything and while college is a time to have fun it is also the time to focus on yourself and the decisions you make for your future. High school friends and new friends can wait for now.If someone is really your friends, they will understand when you won’t be able to hang out and they will still be there to support you, but for now, YOU DO YOU!

Focus on your classes and long term goals, there is nothing more beautiful than to discover what you are capable of being on your own and when I say that I mean that we also need to learn how to be alone and how to be okay with it.Go out by yourself, do things outside of school by yourself, go to the gym by yourself, have lunch by yourself and learn to have a happy life without the presence of others around you. That is when you will learn that when everything goes wrong and you have no one there by your side, you are the only one that can change the way you see things and you will know how to be happy on your own.
