Where to Go to Give Back During the Holiday Season

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at NMSU chapter.

We are all currently in the midst of the season of giving. It is nearly time for gift exchanges and celebration with friends and family, surrounded by an abundance of food. With all the love floating in the air over the holiday season, it is the perfect time for everyone to give back to their communities. Here are five charitable, non-profit organizations that could always use some help here in the Las Cruces area.

  • Asombro Institute for Science Education

This institute is focused on teaching natural science literacy to students of all ages. Anyone who is in kindergarten and above can learn with the Asombro Institute. You can help people learn more about their environment by donating money, volunteering, or becoming a sponsor for a student. Their website also has plenty more about getting involved and helping this wonderful institute with big aspirations.

  • Big Brothers Big Sisters

The Big Brothers and Big Sisters program of Las Cruces hopes to make impactful differences on children’s lives through mentoring. Mentors work hard with children to ensure them healthy and successful futures. The Las Cruces branch could always use monetary donations, household items, and clothing donations. Not to mention, one can always become a big brother or big sister themselves. You can visit their website for more information. You can also contact them at (575) 523-9530 or at their location at 221 W Griggs Ave, Las Cruces NM 88005.

  • El Caldito Soup Kitchen

This soup kitchen that is located at 999 W Amador Ave here in Las Cruces aims to provide meals to the homeless and poverty stricken in the local community. Since Thanksgiving is coming up, it’s important that everyone who lives in our community gets a nice hot meal. El Caldito Soup Kitchen provides a warm place to rest and delicious food to anyone who might need it. They are always looking for volunteers, especially during the holiday seasons. They are open from 7:45am to 1pm every day and can be reached at (575) 525-3831.

  • La Piñon, Sexual Assault Recovery Services of Southern New Mexico

This organization does very important work by providing services related to sexual violence and child abuse to victims. They are located at 850 N Motel Blvd, Suite B in Las Cruces N.M. One can always volunteer with their various crisis hotlines or one can simply donate money that would be used to provide greater care to their patients. Their email is: office@lapinon.org and more information can be found here.

  • Safe Haven Animal Sanctuary

The Safe Haven Animal Sanctuary is a no kill adoption center for pets. They provide temporary homes to dogs and cats who currently do not have one. To help out this organization, one can volunteer, donate monetary donations/items from this list or they may even adopt a pet if they would like a new furry companion to keep them company. They are open on weekdays from 9am to 6pm and on Saturdays from 9am to 5pm at 840 El Paseo Rd here in Las Cruces. Their website also has plenty of information about how anyone can assist them is providing the best for those they care for.

While there are only five charities listed here, there are plenty of others that aren’t, which we encourage you to donate or pay a visit to. Even if you don’t live in the Las Cruces area, you should go look up your local charities and give back where you can. It is very important that we give back to our beloved communities during the hectic holiday seasons, so we highly encourage you to donate some your time or money within the coming months if you are able to do so. Be sure to give thanks for what you have and give to those who do not have as much this Thanksgiving.
