The Toxic Friendship of Blair & Serena

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at NMSU chapter.

***This article will have many spoilers about Gossip Girl. And as a big fan of the show myself, if you haven’t watched it, please go watch it and come back to read this. Thanks.***

Gossip Girl is truly one of the most iconic TV shows. It was one of the first to put so much importance on fashion. We all wanted Blair’s headbands, Serena’s gorgeous dresses, remember Dan’s satchel, and loved Chuck Bass in his suits. If you were like me, after watching Gossip Girl you immediately wanted to go to the Upper East Side and sit on The Met steps. But maybe you weren’t as extreme as I was. It doesn’t matter how much you loved Gossip Girl though, if you watched it at all you knew Serena and Blair were really bad friends to each other.

Gossip Girl was love at first watch. And as I watched it further, I began questioning why Blair & Serena were friends at all. I will try my best to be unbiased because I love Blair and can’t stand Serena (for very obvious reasons). They were both strong female leads, so strong that they would fight in almost every episode, and every season had a major fight between the two.

Where should I start? Serena sleeping with Blair’s boyfriend, Nate? Or Blair publicly announcing to college scouts that Serena was a drug addict? Or Serena completely ruining Blair’s chance of going to her dream university? Or Blair telling someone Serena had killed a man?

If you’ve read this far and have never watched Gossip Girl, you are probably very confused and shocked. I don’t blame you. This show was scandalous (inserts sparkle emoji before and after “scandalous” for more character). But again, very worth the watch.

So, I have listed a few things both girls have done to each other, really bad things. But I really believe that this toxic friendship is toxic for far more than that. They really envied each other and always tried to one up the other. They kept a lot of secrets from each other, and if you feel like you can’t tell your best friend a secret then why are you even friends? Trust is an important pillar in friendships. They also didn’t care for each other’s feelings much and were very selfish when making decisions that could affect them both.

I really believe that Blair was the one who tried the most in this friendship and staying in it, only made her feel resentment towards Serena. It also made her very bitter. Which is very damaging for both of them. At the beginning of the show, Serena is coming back after completely abandoning Blair without a note. What best friend does that? Blair was going through a lot when Serena was gone, and she needed her the most after her parents’ divorce.

You may think, “wow Christina really IS biased when it comes to Blair”. Look, I know Blair isn’t the greatest person, she has “minions” I didn’t forget about that. But I believe the only reason she didn’t treat those other girls with much respect was because she was tired of feeling let down and wanted to keep her guard up. Her only best friend had just abandoned her without a trace and I think she had the right to feel guarded. But yes, I know, she shouldn’t of treated those girls as badly.

If you’ve forgotten more reasons about why Serena and Blair were toxic friends, here are a few lists of things that weren’t included in this article.
