Why it’s Great to Take Part in Team Sports at University

Every student will remember going to freshers fair and pondering the thought of whether or not they should venture out into the life of a university sports player. For some, the answer was no as stories you’ve been told spring to mind such as the ruthless training, the rivalry and of course the drinking. These things may be part of some university teams however, there are so many more positives to come from being part of a team sport.

The first of these many advantages is probably the most obvious; making friends. As cliché as it sounds, getting stuck into a sport or a society when you go to university is actually a great way to make friends for life. Your current friends may include the people you have lived with and a handful of those on your course. Joining a sports team at uni gives you the advantage of getting to know a different set of people with the same interests and likes as you. The team will include people from various courses and in all different year groups. Whether you are a fresher or a postgrad it would be pretty hard not to make mates in your team.

A popular connotation of university teams includes drinking. However, is this really such a bad thing? Being part of the team comes privileges especially on a Wednesday night. After all matches have been played and the rivalry and sweat has been left on the pitch, most teams will celebrate or commiserate with a social. Let’s not forget the words all students love to hear…discounts. Yes, I’m talking student deals plus sports team deals. An even cheaper night out ahead.

Another reason why sports teams are such a great idea to get involved with is the brain booster aspect. We all know that exercise is a great way to get our minds in gear and with everyone else in your team being a student they will know exactly what stresses you may have. Relieving stress by sweating it out in a match is a great way to keep you moving, release those endorphins and feel great.

And with exercise and fitness on the rise like never before, nearly every university has high quality facilities. Your choices are almost endless as to what sport you could pick to join. From hockey to surfing to dance to Frisbee you can’t not get involved. If you’re not the sporty type no problem, there will be something for everyone, even standards and experience are excluded from the criteria.

With all these great reasons and so many more as to why being part of a sports team is great at university it would be a shame to miss out. Most teams allow a taster session for anyone and everyone to try it out, no commitment, no questions asked. Even if being part of the team is just to fill in your spare time or something to add onto your CV, its something you most certainly won’t regret…trust me.
