My Review of Christian Dior: Designer of Dreams

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at New School chapter.

The Brooklyn Museum currently houses a wonder amongst the earth.

Immediately when you enter you are greeted by glittering walls, tranquil sounds of nature, and an aesthetic that would make a fairy-core fanatic fall in love!

You are not in the Garden of Eden. Rather, you are in something even more spectacular, Dior’s enchanted garden. The place in between heaven and earth, reach and opportunity, garment and art. It is no surprise that visitors such as me would feel overwhelmed in the presence of such beauty. Even actress and director, Reese Witherspoon got emotional.

On September 10th, the Brooklyn Museum opened Christian Dior: Designer of Dreams, an exhibit that displays the House of Dior’s legacy to the public. Iconic pieces from the Dior archives include Miss Dior’s very own dress, as well as pieces once worn by A-list celebrities from Anya Taylor-Joy to Rihanna.

In the exhibit, you are submerged by a plethora of sketches, swatches, and garments from varying decades. As you descend further into the inner workings of Dior’s hierarchy, you encounter garments by his successors, Yves Saint Laurent, Raf Simons, Marc Bohan, Maria Grazia Chiuri, John Galliano, and Gianfranco Ferré (whose use of lavish ornamentation and Italian baroque-esque design in his Spring-Summer 1992 collection left me speechless.)

So why should you visit?

Any fashion or art enthusiast can draw inspiration from this exhibit. However, this can be applied to your average joe who may not be enthralled with fashion. Anyone can draw inspiration from the works of Mr. Dior himself. He exemplifies the beauty that can come from following one’s dreams. He once stated, “It is unforgivable to do what one doesn’t love especially if one succeeds.”

But don’t take my word for it! Go see Christian Dior: Designer of Dreams at the Brooklyn Museum yourself today! The exhibit is open until February 20th.
