Donald Trump Demands an Apology and That is NOT Okay

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at New School chapter.

Donald J. Trump, the man who will soon be the leader of the free world has sent out two Tweets demanding that the cast of the hit Broadway musical “Hamilton” apologize to Mike Pence, the man who will soon be the Vice President America. These uncalled for Tweets come as a response to Friday night’s “Hamilton” performance, that of which Pence was of attendance.

The harassment claims refer to a respectful message from the “Hamilton” cast members, specifically Brandon Victor Dixon, that the new presidential administration “uphold our American values and work on behalf of all of us.” While some of the crowd members voiced their opinion on Pence through collective boos, Dixon did not condone it. “There’s nothing to boo here, ladies and gentlemen. We’re all here sharing a story of love.”

Here is the actual footage of the exchange, posted on Hamilton’s Twitter account.

There are so many reasons why this behavior is unacceptable from Mr. Trump. For starters, I am sure the president-elect knows a thing or two about the United States constitutional amendments, namely Amendment I, which protects our freedom of speech. By demanding an apology from a citizen who requested that your administration protect all people of the land certainly seems like an infringement.

Let’s also take a look at Mr. Trump’s track record. To members of black communities, Mexican communities, Muslim communities, LGBT communities, women and others, Donald Trump has said some pretty “nasty” things…

…And we all DEMANDED an apology. Time and time again. And, I’m sad to say that those apologies haven’t appeared to be on Trump’s list of priorities.

Ironically, it is because of that unapologetic attitude and harshness toward Mr. Trump’s out-group that Brandon Dixon and the “Hamilton” cast felt the need to express their fear and voice their concern. Had Trump apologized for all his hurtful comments, he probably might not be in this predicament.

And, it’s not like the cast retaliated in any way. This was not a fight fire with fire situation, but for his sake, let’s assume it is.

So… Mr. Donald Trump, if you want “Hamilton” to apologize to Mike Pence, then we suggest you apologize to Mexicans, Muslims, blacks, women, and the LGBT community first.

Please, Mr. Trump, be the bigger man and “Make America Great Again.” That is what you promised, after all.
