My Experiences in a Long Distance Relationship

My significant other and I have been together for almost four years now. We met at our orientation the summer we started here at New Paltz. We have both had an amazing time going to school together and enjoying New Paltz together for four years. When I was a sophomore I decided to change my major and when I applied to the program I am currently in, I knew it meant I would have to stay for an extra year and that he would be leaving a year before I did.

This summer we spent a lot of time together working on getting used to the fact that we wouldn’t be able to grab lunch between classes anymore or hang out and do our homework together. The end of August came, and I packed up my stuff and returned to New Paltz. Living in a suite with five of my friends has made the transition much easier than I thought it was going to be. However, there is still a part of me that feels off because he is not here.

I think this feeling is natural and it’s a good sign that I miss him and he misses me. I’m not letting the distance create a huge hole in my life. I’m also not allowing myself to mope around. I’ve been spending more time with my friends and been able to have more girls nights and still have a good time. I look forward to every time he visits and I’m still adjusting to not having him here. The distance now will allow our relationship to grow stronger and let us get used to giving one another that space.
