One of my long-standing favorite shows has been Sex and the City. The show had the perfect mixture of comedy, friendship, love, sex, and style to forever be a classic. When I heard that Netflix had added a new show starring Lily Collins titled, Emily in Paris, that was deemed a modern Sex and the City I had to watch. I decided to binge it all in one night and here’s how it went:

The show opens up with Emily, a twenty-something working in marketing and advertising. As her boss can’t make it to be the exchange employee for the Paris location Emily is set up with the promotion. In spite of her long-term relationship Emily decides to try long-distance which ultimately fails, packs her bags, and heads to Paris. As the show continues on she finds love, passion, friendship, and new opportunities. In all, I would give the show a 7/10, and here’s why. My favorite part had to be the fashion. I heard some people weren’t huge fans and I could potentially understand why. As someone who grew up idolizing Blair Waldorf and Chanel, I loved it. The stylist took creative inspiration from old Chanel and classic brands and made that more fun which pushed the envelope on tweed sets and pea coats.

As for the storyline, it was cute and that’s about it. The show was bingeable and fun to get through in one night. It took me straight back to my trip to Paris and I wanted to book another one as soon as possible. The couple things I had a particular distaste with was the lack of girl code within the show. Emily is portrayed as a sweet innocent American girl, but when she develops feelings for her new friend’s boyfriend she doesn’t do much to stop herself making the message of girl power a little dull. Lastly, I wish the show took a more mature stance. Sex and the City is if one word “raunchy”. The maturity and graphicness of the show helped it be more relatable, real, and raw. Sadly Emily in Paris tried to push the envelope but failed in trying to also keep PG-13 to broaden their audience. I would love it if next season Netflix makes the show more mature. In the end, my answer is WATCH. The show is fun, light-hearted, dreamy, and eye candy for any lazy Friday night, but don’t expect an authentic viewing of Parisian culture.
