In this generation, dating is still thriving but so is hook-up culture. And then there is this thing in the middle that no one knows what to call. Some call it ‘being friends’, others call it ‘friends with benefits’, but some are confused when feelings get involved. That’s where the term ‘situationship’ comes into effect. But you may be wondering what a situationship actually is. But that’s exactly what it is, it’s a unique situation. There is no exact science to it and there is most definitely no exact definition to the word. If you do want to get technical there is a definition on Urban Dictionary; but at the end of the day, it is Urban Dictionary. Their definition of a situationship is as follows: Let’s just chill, have sex, and be confused on the fact that we are not together but have official emotions for each other. So by reading this you can figure out if you are in a situationship with your significant other or not. It is a broad place in the middle of a relationship and being friends. Two people can go from being friends to wanting to experiment and become more than friends, but they fear being in a relationship because of society’s labels. Or they can just have casual sex straight from the jump. Regardless, if feelings start to develop but nothing as become official, a situationship is usually what will develop. You are basically dating without the labels. Most of the time you are also exclusive but like I mentioned before there is no right way to how this works.

Society’s labels should not influence people to do anything they are not ready or willing to do. In an overall perspective, these labels do not mean anything at the end of the day. They are simply to refer to something that you are trying to figure out. No one should let labels get to their head because if you are happy, nothing else matters. Just have fun with what you are doing, make sure there is consent, and be safe!
